Question about how hard you throw?
« on: December 01, 2009, 11:27:38 AM »
So i was watching the PBA show two weeks ago and they said Ronnie Russell was throwing about 20mph..

Now, are they talking about at the heads or at the 40ft mark??

I say this cuz I throw mid 16mph ( Qubica ) and if I was throwing 20mph even with the revs I have, the ball would skid into the 6pin lol...  I do bowl on a 2nd shift league so we get alot of carry down... And even my Virtual Gravity sometimes skids right past the pocket, and thats going right up the track...

Now I've wonder'd this for a while cuz most people say the faster you throw the better you'll score (within reason)  But If any one was to throw 18+ mph on the lanes i bowl on, they'd skid right past the pocket..

I'm just wondering if the Pro's can get away with it only because the backends are so dry?????

i think its at the heads and i believe they have to deal with a lot more hook on the back most times.

Heads? 22-23??

I know it is around the low 19s at the pins when using my regular ball speed.

I feel the "show" over hypes the ball speed aspect and ignores the real talent aspect of the pro's.probably to tough to describe to the average viewer so hence the ball speed hype.

I guess I always kinda figured that it was mesured at the heads..  Not sure why they dont use the 40ft mark speed????  I think it would be alot more helpful to the average joe....

If I remember right the CATS measures speed and ball position at several spots along the lane.

I beleive the first speed reading is at the 10 foot mark.

This would be the most telling speed as the lane/ball surface would have no effect on the ball speed at that point. So if you are wanting to know how consistent a bowlers speed is this would be the speed you would measure.

so if qubica speed says that im at 18 mph, what do you think it would be for pba speed?
quote:
It should be an average speed from foul line to pins.  They have sensors all the way down the lane to read the speed.  On qubica you only have one sensor at about 40 feet, so if you were bowling on the lanes that they are then yes your speed would be faster than what qubica is showing.

"I'm just wondering if the Pro's can get away with it only because the backends are so dry?????"

I am bowing in a league at a new brunswick center - they use the same lane machine used by the PBA - - Wet then extreme dry is the condition.  Our current pattern length is 44 feet with 85 units of oil.  Yes high speed/high rev bowlers do well here - but actually everyone likes this shot - provides multiple lines to the pocket - every type of ball works well from heavy oil hook monsters to down and in urethane.

Our league started with a patteren that was 38 feet - the pattern was lenghtened over several weeks - no one wanted their spare ball to hook 10+ boards.  No one wanted to be forced to throw hard and fast at every shot.

Short oil followed by Extreme Dry is very difficult to be consistent on if you are not really good at repeating shots or if you don't have equipment that matches the condition.

to fig your head speed from the qubica reading just add aprox. 3 to 4 mph.

The more revs that are on the ball the more speed it will end up burning off when it makes its turn.

My normal ball speed at the pins is 17.5 to 19 but when i increase the revs and axis rotation from 20deg to about 75 - 80deg my speed drops to around 15.5 - 16. and that is with the same backswing.
