Question about pre-bowling
« on: October 06, 2009, 03:16:40 AM »
I have a question about pre-bowling. I had to pre-bowl for one of my leagues and I bowled a 300 and had a 700 series. I know that I don't get a ring or anything, but I was wondering how others leagues work. Do you still get listed as high scratch game and series or is that not allowed either?

Ahh, yes, the good ol'' Mushtare rule!  Thank Robby for that!

I think you still get all credit for the score, just nothing in the way of awards from the USBC.  Have you tried asking your league officers?

Prediction:  You are about to become very unpopular with the other teams in your league.

Bowling out is the most unsportsmanlike and unfair practice known to our sport.  It's not your fault.  I can't believe they allow it.

Unsportsmanlike?  No.  I will give you unfair though and the fact that it shouldn't be allowed.  Unless of course both teams could be gathered up to bowl at a different time and date, then I'm okay with it.

Pre-bowling, like sandbagging, is an example of gamesmanship: the use of dubious (although not technically illegal) methods to win a game.  This is poor sportsmanship in my opinion.

Well you're making the assumption that the OP is doing it to gain an advantage to win.  I'm making the assumption that he has something important going on in his life that caused him to miss a week of league and he made an effort to make up that week before hand.  Are you saying that if he had a kid's school function to attend he is still demonstrating poor sportsmanship?  You see where I'm going with this?  I agree if he did it only to have a nice fresh shot all to himself, but I doubt that's the case.

Pre/post bowling is understandable as things like... family events, injuries, and accidents happen... if a person continues to pre or post bowl and always bowls really well when he/she does... then there is something to look at (aka cheating). As for someone bowling well one night of pre bowling... he threw the ball well. Don't discredit a bowlers scores because he caught the lanes right.

I would think they would have to allow it if it's not stated in the rules....but that really depends.

In my Monday league, there was a rule there specifically stating that pre/post bowled scores would not be recognized as part of the awards within the league.  I have issues with that, especially if both teams can pre/post bowl.

I know people argued that you aren't bowling on the same lanes as everyone else, but in my league, the oil about an hour or so before league and still have open bowl until we get ready.....so no one can tell me that everyone is on the same lane condition.

In addition, I see it that if one team is bowling unopposed, then they are not transitioning through the same issues the others are anyways.

We did alter the wording for our league to allow pre/post bowled scores to be considered for league awards if both are present to bowl.

Name one other sport where this practice is allowed.  Better yet name one sport where the advantage of playing by yourself is so much greater.

I fully discredit his scores from team competition.  Congratulations on your 300, nice personal achievement.  The scores were still not bowled under the same conditions as the rest of the league bowlers.

golf, conditions could be easier the day you do it(less wind, softer greens) and when your by yourself less pressure.

I could "golf out" as many times as you like and never shoot 20-30 strokes under my average.

Really sucks when that happens.  This is why I will never pre-post bowl.  If I can't make it that night then oh well.

I''m not saying I wouldn''t do it.  I would make every effort to get a sub first.  It''s not my fault or the original poster''s fault that they haven''t made a rule against it.  I''d love to bowl out an entire season just to prove a point.  The bottom line is MONEY is on the line.  An unfair advantage is costing people MONEY.  Maybe a few cents, maybe a few bucks, maybe a hundred bucks.

In agreement, unless the league has a rule prohibiting pre/post bowling there is not a problem.  I have seen this topic hashed over multiple times in the past couple of years and it is always the same.  I prefer to bowl during the normal league but once or twice a year our team has kids events that we attend that will not allow us to field a team during that week of league(and normally our scores are lower because we bowl on fried lanes).  I have seen responses by some that the only allowable excuse should be if you are gone to nationals  should you be allowed to make up.  Sorry but that is not any different unless your league has a rule preventing it.  Most of the teams make every attempt to field a team during the normal league but sometimes circumstances make this impossible.

Good bowling and good luck.
