Question about span???
« on: July 02, 2003, 08:57:48 PM »
I quit bowling in 1990 and didn't pick up a ball until about 3 years ago. When I started back, I took and old ball and just had it copied. I was only bowling 3 games a week until about 7 months ago. After bowling long formats or 8 to 12 games, my ring finger joints were killing me and the ends of my fingernails had what looked like blood blisters.

After consulting my ball driller, he about freaked out, my span was way to long and that was the reason for the injuries. Also, I twrilled the ball and had a low track. We drilled a old ball up with the proper span and noticed the track higher. It does feel a little strange but hope to adapt to it. It also seems like I'll have more options to make hand postion changes.

Also, my driller couldn't believe the lack of flexablity in my fingers.

Any thoughts on this?

Many bowlers bowl with spans that are too long. The symptoms are often what you described a “burning of the finger tips” or even blood blisters. If you don’t bowl a lot this will not really be a problem but if you start bowling more then it becomes an issue.

Almost all the pro’s on the tour use a relaxed finger tip span. This allows the most versatility in releases and puts the least amount of wear and tear on the hand.

You should be able to put you thumb fully into the ball and then lay (don’t stretch) the palm of your hand on the ball and let the fingers lay on top of the finger holes. The first knuckle should be at least 1/3 the way across the hole/insert. A little shorter is ok but not longer.

As far as flexibility of the fingers go. You can become less flexible over time particulary when like you quit bowling for a while. Not stretching the span will help this. But as Ragnar said you can pitch the fingers away to help this. Generally the proper span will allow you to use zero forward/reverse on the fingers.

Pinbuster, I disagree slightly here. A little shorter than 1/3 for people might be OK if their fingers are really flexable, but people with stiffer fingers like myself need the first joint at least 1/2 way across finger holes unless a person wants to run high reverse pitch on the thumb which will then lead to squeezing. I tried just about every combination of pitches, spans. etc. imaginable in April-May this year prior to my lung surgery and that is my findings for myself.

I may not have said it well. A little shorter span than 1/3 the way across is ok, in other words 1/3 the way across is the least amount your knuckle should go across the hole. So your 1/2 is fine. But longer spans often do hurt their user.

Only a lefty could average 220, bowling once a week, with a ball that doesn't even fit his hand.

You might message LuckyLefty.  Many of his posts have an amazing amount of information in them, including finger pitches for non flexible joints.

Stider, Funny, I thought the same thing.  That just shows how easy the left side is.  My good looks and natural talent will only take me so far, now I'm ready to learn to bowl.

Hose, don't forget to take your bottle of wine with you in case you would get lucky and find some chicks.
