i tend to squeeze the ball even with 3/8 under in thumb. i believe its because the shape of my thumb, what are your opinions on the thumb straight(i believe thats what it is called). their is alot of space at the bottom of my thumbhole even when its tight everywhere else. my thumb is wide from side to side with callous on back knuckle.

The callous would lead a ball driller to belive that you are using an excessive ammount of reverse pitch.

Or you "Claw" the ball.

I had that problem before as well, but it has seem to have gone away and my thumb is almost normal. Happend using a ball that was pitched at 0, now im at 1/16 left lateral and like 1/4 reverse, i want to experiment with more foward pitch.

I guess with the ball at 0, i was clawing even though it was more forward than what im currently at.

im 3/8 forward, no reverse now. thats how i tore my thumb up i believe, too much reverse. i still have to squeeze because of the space around tip of my thumb.

Pitches maybe one thing but it may also be the interior of the thumb hole. Here is how I test a thumb hole. Hold the ball straight down by your side. Just let it hang there. Close your eyes and feel the thumb hole for pressure. Any place you feel pressure would be the problem. Take a piece of screen and work the opposite side of the hole from where the pressure is. You may also need to work the area where the pressure is but not as much. Do this process until you feel zero pressure on any one area of the thumb. When the hole is right the only thing you should feel is the weight of the ball. It is like you are not holding a bowling ball at all yet it will not fall off. If the hole is too big at the bottom, slug the hole and redrill.

The Thumb Straight will do exactly what its name says - keep your thumb straight in the hole (prevent "knuckling"). It won't keep you from squeezing the ball, you'll just squeeze it with the pad of your thumb instead of the tip. You could also try either a Magic Carpet or a Thumbillow to fill the space in the back of your thumb hole. I have one customer that uses a Thumb Straight in combination with a Magic Carpet - he averaged 234 last season. That's not to say the TS and MC resulted in that average, but that even good bowlers use this type of thumb aid. -- JohnP
