Ever "feel" like you are not throwing the ball well?
« on: January 10, 2005, 05:37:56 AM »
I bowled a tourney this past weekend.  6 games across 12 pair.  Shot was a fair tournament shot...  started out fairly heavy oil with a small OB outside of 5.  The big crankers could swing it out and get it to come back, but the rest of us had to play around it.  I shot pretty miserable the first three games (560's), but once the shot opened up a little I had a better look (shot 670 back 3 games).  I ended at +30, but through the entire day, I just didn't feel as if I was throwing the ball well.  I'm not sure if it was the bad start, or the fact that three of the top 10 guys were bowling on my pair...or that I just wasn't on top of my game..  just had that feeling.

A few weeks ago in league, I only shot 620, but felt like I was throwing the ball really well.... strange.  I guess that is the difference between a super easy league shot and slightly modified league shot?!?!  Happen to anyone else?

Yep. I've had that feeling more than once. I shot 508 the other night while throwing the ball well. I went X, pocket 7-10, X, 4-9, 7-10, X, 4-9 (adjusting all the while...) - and it went on that way a lot of the night.
Conversely, I've shot 708 and felt that I truly got away with a lot.

Its very possible, the most frustrating nights for me are when I score ok but throw the ball like crap.  I usually feel my hand coming over the side of the ball, or always stick a little, then slip a little, or whatever.  Other nights I feel everything perfectly in synch, and even if I don't score well, I know I could've.

Been that way for at least a year now. Barry Manilow actually sang the "theme song" for us bowlers. Remember it? "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again".

I experience this all the time, some nights up, some down.  I shot 741 two thursdays ago, felt like I got away with more than one or two.  The following Thursday, I shot 625 and felt like I was throwing the ball great.

That is life, I guess.  How much a person concentrates may play a key role.  If you aren't concentrating very much and then try to bear down, it can be difficult to get going.  But, you are concentrating and ready to bowl, then I think it can minimize those off nights.  But, they can still happen, either way.

I've felt this a lot of nights in my Tuesday league, where everything seems off for one reason or another and I just can't seem to get things together. I've also had other nights where I was very off in terms of timing or targetting yet the scores were reflected in a high way. The law of averages I guess...

We talk about this all the time.  Some nights you are throwing the ball different all the time but you make one mistake to counteract the other one and the ball hits and carries in spite of all the things you did or didn't do.  Then the  next night you can have the best looking ball you have thrown in months and leave pins standing all over the place.  It's bowling and that just will never change.

Humidity, amount of heat in the building, temperature of the lane machine when used, temp of the stripper when mixed, when the lanes were oiled, who is bowling against or with you, and on and on and on, all plays a role in what happens.  How much each of these have to do with carry is debatable, but they all have a bearing on your perception of how you are throwing the ball.

I sometimes wonder if what I consider a "good" shot is actually that much different than one I think isn't as good.  You can go by feel off your fingers to let you know when you got a great release, get feedback from the ball path as to whether you have hit the correct area of the lane, and read things into what pins are standing and how they fell, but in the end sometimes it is just plain luck as to whether the pins fall or not.  So despite what you think about your execution, score sometimes can be subject to other things.  Of course the better your execution, the higher your scores will be in the end (average), but there are those days when score just isn't an indicator of effort or ability.  Thankfully that doesn't happen that often.
