What a crazy word. I always hear how people "just want to be happy". Soap operas, commercials, movies, and every other form of media perpetuates the dream of "being happy".

Beyond that, the dream is also perpetuated as something we want to achieve right now, at this minute. This is why throwing a strike is so great, because it makes us feel happy right now.

"Good things come to those who wait" is a phrase we seldom here anymore. Nobody has time to work toward a goal, as they want to win the Super Bowl this year.

This is a big part of the problem when we look at the big picture of "saving our sport". It's not going to happen right away. Sport bowling is a big ugly monster to a lot of people because they do not understand it. Sport bowling can make anybody's game better over the long haul, so we need to get people to see that and work toward these long term goals.

In Detroit, I have been trying to promote and run these sport tournaments, and people continue to flock to the shootout tournaments rather than come and bowl in my sport tournaments. We had 18 at the first event, 8 at the next, and 9 this past Saturday. There was another shootout trio tournament that popped up, and everybody flocked to that.

The problem is, in 5 years even the shootout tournaments won't exist anymore. So how do we get these people to see this? In smaller cities in Michigan, my sport tourneys draw much better. It seems everybody in Detroit is so caught up in "the game" (not referring to bowling) that they do not stop to smell the roses. If they could stop for even just a minute, they might see what is happening right before their eyes!

Hi Jeff. The event last Saturday was at Royal Oak Lanes in Royal Oak, and I had a few people passing out flyers during various leagues and tournaments. I am simply spread too thin to promote it in the Bowler's Digest or to put flyers in every single center and pass them out in every center.

In regards to the PBA league you bowled in...

I too have seen things like this happen. These "elite" bowlers are so brainwashed by the house shots, that they forgot what it was like to use their brain during bowling. There's nothing worse than bowling on something that you can't figure out, or being in a slump and not knowing what you are doing wrong.

Soooo, the key is to do exactly what you suggested--offer practice time. The Sport Shot Open Bowling Program is a program that I offer to bowling centers that purchase a membership from me. I advertise it on my website, in my emailer, and also print up a flyer for the center to make copies and circulate. Beyond that, the center really should offer coaching of some sort. I would also love to do some seminars for people to explain why sport bowling is important and how the bowlers need to practice on it.

The other reason that those "elite" bowlers got so frustrated refers back to the topic of this post. They couldn't figure it out RIGHT NOW, so they probably deemed it a waste of their time. It truly is a broken mentality that needs fixing!

I don't believe I know the owner of Country Lanes, but perhaps it's time for me to come down and see if they are interested in purchasing a membership so that we can do a seminar and set up some practice times for the sport shot/pba patterns.

Michigan bowling, once I turn adult, you'll be sure to see me at all the sport tourneys you run in the detroit area. You are providing a great service to the sport and should get much more recognition.

Bob, where do you live?

There seems to be an opportunity with you junior bowlers moving up to adults. Most of the people I get during the summer have only recently moved up to adults. MJMA really prepares the kids for tough shots, and they seem to like it and look for it when they move up. This should be a lesson to proprietors!

Yes, mjma really does a nice service for us junior bowlers. They always put out pretty tough conditions, and really prepare you for the competitive aspect of bowling. Hopefully mjma stays in place for many years, Dan really did a good job with the program, and it was a sad day for the sport when he passed.
