"Invitation Only League"
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:59:16 AM »
Have any of you ever heard of an invitation only league. If so, does the USBC have any rules about the criteria that a bowling alley must use in allowing teams to participate in league play?

Thanks

Is this the same as a league strictly for a certain group, like a church or someone like the Moose or Elks? I would imagine that they can restict membership for those kinds of leagues. We had to put in our by-laws that our league was for "men only" a couple of years back when there was an "issue" with a certain bowler of a different gender.

Most invitational leagues are also memorial leagues for either a prior member that past away or a family member.  An invitational league is just that though, its by invitation and there is no rules against from either USBC or the House itself, nor should there be.

I don't know about the "nor should there be part." Let's suppose that all of the white team captains decided to vote not to allow a black team to participate. I can see problems with that.

Okay and lets suppose all the black team captains decided to vote not to allow a white team to participate?  Would you see problems with this?

I bowled in an invitational league early in my career.  You had to be invited, and approved by majority of team captains.  The league was full, there was no inviting whole teams.  I was added as a member to an existing team.  If I remember correct, it was scratch, but you had to have certain average requirements on each team.  League was very even, very competitive, and very hard to get into.

Wasn't exactly invitation only, but when I was in school there was a scratch travel league.  Number of teams was set based on the smallest house, team captains were established ahead of time (not sure how that worked)...and then the captains drafted who they wanted on their team.  There were always more bowlers than spaces.  A lot of the extra bowlers would end up as subs, but there were always guys that wanted to bowl but didn't get on a team.

Our area has two draft scratch leagues.  YOu fill out a form to get included in the draft.  YOu may or maynot be picked.  Both are pretty high level scratch leagues.

There are all kinds of leagues that restrict membership.  Many even charge membership fees, in addition to USBC fees.

If Rule 100f applies, as far as the center, you'd be the same as any other league. You'd have to figure out if that rule applies to what the league you're talking about applies to it.

Thanks all for the replies. Azguy, I think you may be correct. Vague rule though, at best.
