Question for high average players
« on: April 01, 2004, 02:53:47 PM »
When the shot breaks down...What move do you prefer to make first?

1) Look further down the lane
2) Alter release
3) Change equipment
4) Move into the oil.
5) Other - please explain...

Lol, look further down the lane?  How does that help?  I prefer not to switch balls, I'd rather just move my feet.  On a normal house shot, you should be able to keep the same breakpoint.  If they get dry, move left, they get wet, move right.  Of course, my solution for everything here is move right and throw harder.  Usually works.  Actually I've started to throw plastic too.  My first and only 4 games throwing plastic this season so far?  202-206-247-257.

Anyway, unless your shot just typically goes to hell, you just break it down.  If you've thrown one ball the first game or two, it must be the one that gave you the best look, right?  Unless it's more than a simple burning of the track, you should be able to do whatever's most comfortable for you.  If you like throwing faster, stay in the same place.  If you throw slower, move left a little.  If you're throwing particle and are burning up the mids, move to a solid that goes further down the lane.  I wouldn't suggest going pearl unless it's really smooth, they tend to be jumpy in wet/dry situations.  There are a ton of different things you can do.

If you're just taking a poll and not asking for advice, I just start throwing harder.

Not being judgmental, just asking, L-O-L.  Like I say, if it works, it works.

4. Move into the oil. Always a good first move, should move both your feet and your target.

3. Change equipment.  If moving doesn’t get back into the pocket.

2. Alter release. If you can’t make your “A” game work, this includes ball speed.

I chase the oil as far as I am comfortable which
is about 5th arrow then I change balls and move back
to the right if I have alot of frames left to throw
that way I have room to start chasing the oil again.
If I only have a few frames left in the last game then
I will change balls to a slightly weaker cover/core
combination to allow me to keep throwing my
current line.

I chase the oil - but sometimes I just can't catch it..
Then I change equipment.

For example, last night, I started out right in the track around 13-10-7 breakpoint.
At the end of the second game, I was releasing around 20, to 16, to a breakpoint around 10. Still going through the face - moved one more board left, bucket. Then I CHANGE BALLS!!!!

I will try to move left first. However if I really like the line that I am playing I will switch to a weaker ball and stay on the same line. If I am scoring well with the ball I will move left. If it is a little struggle with the ball then I will change to something different.

If the ball works great and my scores a high, then I chase the oil as far as I can then change equipment.  After all of that, I will start altering my game.

Chase oil because todays ball burn up easliy. To avoid fighting that, I always start the ball in oil. If the heads burn up, I have to move with the oil line until I get to 35, then its to deep for me. Manytimes even though I move with the oil line I have to goto more agressive equipment to "get around the corner". The moves become quicker and larger the deep I go. Another point is that while moving deeper, I tend to move my breakpoint with me. And by the time I get to 35 I am typically playing 35 to 15 (15 at 45 or 50). I find for my release when I am that deep and tring to play 35 to 10 my balls are simply dead, flat 10 all day long.

3.  Change balls first (I mean, you paid for them, right?)
4.  Move
1.  Look further...

Looking further your line down the lane delays your break point.  This is effective when the lanes are burnt or otherwise erratic.  Start by looking only 3' further down the line and see if this delays your ball enough.

At times, I have had to pick out a mark at 45' to get the reaction I wanted.  The good news about this is that a target at 45' can be 3 boards wide vice one at the arrows.

I recommend trying this in practice (especially during open play conditions).  It's a bit different keeping your chin up to view your mark, so don't expect to suddenly be able to do this during league.

An nice line to try is to take high polished ball and target straight up four board at 40'....when it works it's amazin...

For me the progression is usually....

4,3,2,1

Moving your target down the lane really helps you project the ball further and allows you to move your break point further down the lane.  Have been at places where I am targeting a dark board at 45 feet and after practicing this quite a bit it is really a valuable adjustment to make on the toast.....
