Need a resin ball that won't hook
« on: May 05, 2003, 01:34:13 PM »
Do you guys and gals have any suggestion on a resin ball I could find that doesn't hook much. I'm left handed, avg 215, with medium revs and medium speed, and with a low track.
Right now I'm using an old urethane blue pearl hammer. The ball works great and hooks plenty, but I know I give up a few strikes with it. I can't keep up with 725 to 750 everyweek. My favorite ball is a pearl beast, but I can't get it to the arrows on my house shot. I drilled a too hot by storm last week with pin at 12, this didn't work either, hooked way to much, even more than my beast.
I need something with really good lenght and a tame backend. Can anyone please help me with a ball and a layout!

Well if you can't get a Too Hot to work I'm not too sure if one of the weaker balls would be the best either.  I would look into the Big Hit and if you think that is still too strong go after a Hit or the old Flame Reactives.  Drilling wise there are two schools of thought:

1.  a 5x5 or more to produce length and flip
2.  a control drilling with the pin near the pap

It would depend on exactly what kind of read on the lane you are after?

A Pearl Beast won't get long!! this place must have duststorms over the lanes. Maybe something older like a Claw Hammer or a Columbia Shadow/R or C.

I think the old Beast's used Flexcel, but the newer one's have Superflex.  Great cover, but not very mild.

The Storm Blue Hot Flame is my strongest recommendation. It is available on Ebay and many places can still get a hold of one; it is discontinued by Storm.

It is significantly better hitting than a plain pancake core resin and has an extremely controllable hook, but one generally needs definite DRY to make it hook much at all.

I think I may have what you need.

I was having problems with short 28' oiling and/or wild backends.  Really wild - my shot was looking like Tim Mack's.  I was already considering a pin on pap drill.

Constantine kindly suggested a 5 1/2 pin from pap with cg as close to pap as possible.  I drilled up a monster red just the other night.  The lanes were oiled 28' (manager is a friend), mild backends (stripper ratio approx 6:1), 4 of us shot about 5 games each. After that, I had the ball drilled and went testing.  It came to 5 1/2 x 3 1/2.  Drilling took about 30 min.  And I was able to squeeze in another two games.  It is summer here now and the temp is high even in the center - about 29/28 c.  Needless to say, except for the first 15 feet the lane was dry.

All I can say is I now have a reactive ball with a urethane move.  The ball was breaking at around 38-40 feet. with a nice small smooth hook.  I felt that with this reaction I could take out most splits confindently.  It was that predictable. I had an orange dot, and the board difference was only 8 boards. My current speed is about 15 mph, hi track (5 5/8 east, 1/2 north), about 280-300 revs.

Hope this helps, and many thanks to Constantine.

Ambi1,

Was this drilling with the pin and CG & PAP all in one line or what angle did the CG/PN have with the CG/PAP have?

The dry will still react to the ball's surface, whether it's flaring or rolling already. I wish Constantine would explain this in a little detail. Thanks.

If I could get a Red/Black to act like my Blue Hot, I would be a most happy camper.

Charlest - pin,cg and pap was not in line.  My driller was worried about getting illegal with the finger weight.  I haven't measure the cg to pap distance as I had already cause the pro shop to go overtime that night.  I estimate it to be around 3 1/2 from pap.  I'm going practicing later will measure and post tonight.  Also the ending weights.

Another plus, if I practice with this ball, on mild lanes, I have to be accurate to 2 boards on my breakpoint.  Should be a good tool for accuracy.

If a Pearl Beast takes off, that sounds almost like a Big Hit Pearl or a Hit.  The Big Hit Solid hooked too much for me, and just generally sucked, but the Pearl seems to be a more favorable ball.  The Hit would probably be a good idea.  Still, if it's that dry, and the pearl hammer hooks, I don't understand the statement about giving up strikes.  You aren't going to find anything that's going to hook the same and magically carry better.
