Oval vs Round Thumb Hole
« on: August 05, 2007, 03:19:39 AM »

What, if any, is the advantage of using an oval thumb hole over a round one?  Does it make the thumb exit faster?  Does it make it easier to hold onto the ball with less grip pressure?  Is it easier to adjust with tape than a round hole?

Any comments would be appreciated.

If your thumb is pretty flat, it is better to have an oval thumbhole.  If your thumb is round then an oval hole will not be a benefit.  It can be a matter of preference though.

Try one and see if you like it, there is no right or wrong way.

If you have a very oval thumb, then you will be unable to bowl with a round-thumbholed ball without gripping it. If you have a round thumb, then it's less important as long as the front back dimension of the oval is the size of your thumb.

With a round hole, I had to put 5 to 6 pieces of black tape on the back of the thumbhole and one piece of white on the front. With oval, I only need one piece of white on the front of the thumbhole sometimes. The oval feels much better to me.

As stated, I do not think there is a difference in bowling between a round or oval thumb hole. It just depends on how your thumb looks.

My son used to have a round thumb, but after a fractured thumb, it is not oval. SO all his equipment had to be changed so he could get his thumb in the ball.
