Question on Foul rules.
« on: February 01, 2009, 06:53:50 AM »

Here's a situation I ran in to last week and it got me thinking.  Third game, 10th frame.  I've already finished out the last frame for our team.  The final bowler of the other team goes 9/ and needs 6 pins to take the game.  On his delivery he sticks on the approach and tosses a 4 count but he falls forward and plants both hands on the lane, clearly a foul.  He went far enough past the foul line that the lights didn't pick it up.

Now, noone called this foul.  It had no effect at all on the outcome of the score sheets.  But I am wondering if I should have called it and if so, would he have gotten the provisional ball roll?  I see in the rule book that he would if there was a dispute but there's no way anyone could honestly dispute the foul.

I am thinking that the 4 pins should have come off the score and it be left at that.  But as I said before, it really had no effect on the games.  I have no intention of following it up and saying anything about it, I am just curious how it would be handled in a situation where it would have mattered.

A foul is a foul. He gets a zero count and an oil bath.

You could have called the foul. You never know if the 4 pins would have a bearing on standings further down the road.

Now on the same issue about fouls say I go up throw my shot and as I start to move away from the line(obviously nowhere near it and stopped my slide before it as well should I still get called on a foul or should you just fix the score accordingly to accurately show my true scores? I had this happen once on a youth league and it had no real importance just wondering.

Its a foul.  Your team captain should have called it and the player received zero.  If the player had any ethics at all, he should have called his own foul.

Both of the teams I bowl on would have been all over that FOUL.

if the player in question had an ounce of sportsmanship and fair play in his body he would have called the foul himself. barring that, it's up to the captain on the other team to call it.

Im sorry I didnt make it comprehensible, I meant in that the buzzer went incorrectly I was actually walking away from the foul line THEN it went off and gave me a zero. In this case you WOULD fix the score right?

FOUL!  It's his own fault for falling forward.

This also reminds me of a situation where people foul on purpose to better their score, yet a lot of people don't know how to handle it.

Say you are on a spare and you leave a split.  Because you know the likelyhood of you picking up the split is slim, you foul on purpose and conclude that you have a better chance at picking up the spare with a full rack.  But the rules clearly state, any intentional foul is rewarded with a zero for the ENTIRE FRAME.  Have seen this come up before and has caused some heated discussions.

That is a foul, and the pins that were knock down on the shot would not count.  If I was the opposing captain, I would have pointed it out.  If the team that committed the foul protested, I would have shown the rule in the rule book that documents a Foul.

I have a question pertaining to this.

What if I am going through my approach, roll the ball, am slightly off-balance, and put my foot on the area where the ball comes back?

Would that be a foul?  I'm not on the lane, I am outside of the gutter.

Figured I would ask.  It happens to me often if I get too speedy with my feet and would like to know before my mixed team heads to states.

Thanks!

Think of the foul line as extending the entire length of the building.

If any part of your body touches any part of the lane or machinery past that foul line, it is a foul.
