Question On Matching A New Ball to Current Favorite Ball
« on: July 06, 2016, 08:08:59 AM »
My 2005 Storm Vertigo isn't going to last forever.  It's still relatively in great condition (no major scratches or dent, has been through 1 resurface), and can be used in both league play and in tournaments.  If I want to find a new ball that is as close to the Vertigo as possible, will just matching RG, differential, ball weight, and drilling layout be all I need?

Or is the different core design going to make the new ball not quite the same?  I would try to first look at Storm balls to see if a core matches identically, but that might not be possible.

I mentioned the Alpha Crux because it is such a good ball on todays conditions, both house shots and heavier tournament patterns.  I think instead of looking for something that is just like your Vertigo, no matter how much you like it, you look for a strong cored asymmetrical, probably with a solid or hybrid shell.  I like to start with an aggressive shell, but almost always take it up to 4000, and often polish a bit on top of it to match my game  The fact you like the Vertigo at this age tells me it is the layout, not the shell that matches up well for you.  There is no way the shell is anywhere near box condition no matter how meticulous you have been in maintenance.  Get the strong cored ball with similar specs to the Vertigo, and you can tweak the shell to best match your game

avabob, your suggestion would work if the bowler had been out of bowling for a while and has now gotten back into it.  They used to throw a Vertigo and now need a similar ball.

But the OP is currently using the Vertigo and wanting something similar.  To suggest the Alpha Crux for that reason isn't ideal.  Not taking anything away from the Alpha Crux, but it isn't even close to a Vertigo.

To be honest, I am willing to bet the OP will get similar performance from a mid-level ball.  Just because the Vertigo handled heavy oil in its day doesn't mean it does now.

Good point about the Vertigo today.  Like I said, the fact he still likes the Vertigo at this age suggests that it is the core he likes, rather than the shell.  Thus I would suggest an asymmetrical  and tweak the shell to get something similar to his Vertigo reaction.

Only problem is there aren't many medium oil asymmetricals.  Radical Ridiculous line and that's about it.  Perhaps the 900 Global Spec Ops, which I love.

Besides, I am starting to discount whether a ball needs to be symmetrical or asymmetrical.  My main reason is once a ball is drilled, they all are asymmetrical.  Depending on how you drill a symmetrical ball, it can have a large or small differential and intermediate differential.  Same with an asymmetrical.  I don't have Blueprint, but I wonder how much this difference is.  I hear of people drilling high-end asymmetricals with a low flare drilling and I wonder if those post-drilling numbers are higher or lower than a symmetrical drilled with a P4 or double thumb.

As an aging low rev guy I like asymmetrical balls when I get deep.  They seem to give me better continuation off my break point.  I don't go with a strong shell or even an aggressive layout.  Maybe I would get the same thing leveraging a strong symmetrical.

It is true that you can drill a symmetrical ball to behave more like an asymmetric core but there is still a difference between the two cores (most of them anyway).

I am a senior low rev player as well. However, I am in that minority of age 65+ bowlers who throws with quite a bit of velocity. I am clearly "speed dominant".  For me, I have much more success with big differential, asymmetric cores than I do with symmetric balls. They tend to read the lane sooner (and stronger) for me.

What do you guys think about a Critical in that spot?

Also, I don't mean to hijack, but how can you get a symmetric to behave like a symmetric?

I would try to find an overseas domination that has a solid cover....

Honestly that's your best bet. Get on Facebook...find Marc Arca...tell him ball reviews sent you..

And try to have him find you a solid domination line ball.

Thats your best bet!!!

Correct me if I am wrong;  but I do believe international releases are not approved for USBC play.

I looked at an international release to be a replacement of the Paradigm Domination and ultimately didn't buy it because I was concerned that I would not be able to use in all the tournaments.  Most leagues and most local tournaments probably wouldn't care, but other tournaments might.

Most international release are submitted for approval by the USBC. As a result, they have the stamp, "USBC*" on them. If you look, you will see balls made in China, the United States and Mexico with this stamp. As such, they can be used in any tournament sanctioned by the USBC.

Yep. As long as something is on the Approved Ball List it's good to go for any USBC competition.

Just make sure the ball is on there and no sanctioned tournament can bar you from using it.
