Question on staffers opinions on balls...
« on: November 04, 2008, 06:44:45 AM »
I just saw a post in the 900 Gobal forum and a staffer commented on the new Bounty and he said this:

quote:
...this ball by far is the best ball out on the market right now.

Whats your thoughts on this ? What exactly does that mean ?

This is why I stress that staffer opinions be taken with a grain (or whole bag) of salt. You will never see a bad comment

Staffer comments are generally pretty useful for determining the difference and overlap in different balls and different lines from one company.  They are obviously not useful for comparing that company's equipment to anyone else.  And just the same, that quote in general would be useless from anybody, not just a staffer.  Everything's relative and there's entirely too many variables in the equation.

I read more into how enthusiastic the staffer is about that ball, you are right most wont tell you its a bad ball, but the enthusiasm is the selling point.

example

this is a great ball for the house shot  vs
this is by far the best ball I have ever had for a house shot from company "a"

or this ball is first out of my bag vs this ball is the first out of my bag and has actually replaced my favorite ball "a" from Company "a"

Staffers will nevre provide a bad review, but thier words or how they are written out speak volumes

I totally understand that, but this guys a Staffer, so you think he would be wise enough to not post use-less crap like that..lol

I know hes just trying to sell the balls, but with comments like "best ball on the market", you gotta laugh

Depends on the staff member.

For example look at riggs Virtual Gravity and Hy-Road reviews.  http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=219181&ForumID=13&CategoryID=2

Jeff compares one ball to another in the same line balls and in this review tempers his remarks more in matter of fact like this ---> "This was another ball that rolled through the pins, which I like. The one thing it tended to do was rollout for weak 10s when I got it too wide to the dry boards so I think it would carry best staying in the oil. This was hard to do on this pattern as you had to cut it right with no hold in the midlane."  Good honest opinion by a very good nationally known bowler that knows where from where he speaks.

Most staffers throw it well so it's no suprise everything they throw rolls good.  I'm no staffer and I don't even throw it that well and I haven't thrown a bad rolling ball in 6 years that wasn't layout or coverstock mis-matchup.  It's a staffer's job to promote product and shine on the positives.  With that said, the staffers that post on BR are doing their job pretty well.
