First or Second shift preferred

While the original pattern laid out makes a difference, what would you generally prefer to bowl on?

A freshly run pair or a pair that has had one set of a 5 man team bowled on them?

Around here I would say most that those who would be considered the better bowlers in town prefer to shoot on the second shift not the fresh.  These are collegiate bowlers, all Americans and Eagle winners.

Far too often the fresh lanes are too over/under. I know in my traveling scratch league the 3 best teams in the league averages are lower when we go to houses that haven’t had earlier play. They tend to struggle the first game and a half until the lanes blend out. If my team was to bowl them I want them fresh so that they will struggle.

Look at ABC nationals. Until the change the schedule last year, virtually all the top team scores came from the 10:30 PM team squad that bowled on a second shift. Now everyone bowls on fresh and team scores are down dramatically.

Tournaments that don’t run between every squad are giving bowlers a choice. Bowl on fresh if you like or bowl on a second shift pattern.

My team prefers the second shift. Let the early bowlers fight the carry down and black/white condition. We prefer to let the lanes open up some before we bowl.

Which do you prefer and why?

For me it depends on the oil patterns and such.  But if given the choice I typically go after fresh oil and deal with any under / over that might exist the best that I can.  At most tournament I go to the shot breaks down too much after the 1st squad or they become touchy because of all the different line that have been plaid.  Ofcourse in some instance the shot does get better as a tight oil line become more open, etc.  But honestly this is more of an exception than a rule.

I prefer 1st shift fresh oil to 2nd shift bowling, especially if there wasn't a long oil/heavy oil shot put out to begin with. I've cashed more often on a fresh shot than not- although when the lanes are bone dry I can use more ball speed to compensate for the friction....

I like the see the number and work my way toward it. Therefor I perfer the later shifts. But the truth be told, its a crap shoot, I will usually bowl both because you never know which squad will have the highest scoring conditions. I led in both squads not to make the cut because the other squad was high scoring.

On most wet THS's around here, I prefer to bowl 2nd shift to let this pattern settle down some.  I have trouble with the freshly stripped backends and very wet heads.  I either scoot through the breakpoint trying to control the backends or watch the ball overreact on the backend if I try to slow down.  I generally like drier lanes due to my higher speed.

The exception to this is a known house that becomes extremely dry after a short amount of play.  These are usually rare though.
