Quick question about relocating with my bowling bag.
« on: April 23, 2010, 03:33:48 PM »
Hello all! Just had a quick question for those of you who have traveled with your ball bag recently. I'm currently in Texas, but moving to Virginia by way of airplane. I'm going to live with a buddy of mine i.e. I'm not bringing very much stuff with me.

But finally here's to my so called "Quick question". I have a three ball roller at around 47lbs, including everything. Normally I would have just brought it on the plane with me, due to the under 50lbs limit. But I heard a rumor from someone that you could no longer transport bowling ball materials on a plane? I can't seem to find an answer. Was wondering if anyone has had problems with bringing your ball bag as checked baggage? Hopefully the person I heard this from was just pulling my leg..

Ok I had no intention of it being a carry-on.. I did say checked baggage. It's only about a five hour flight anyway. I don't think they will be subjected to temperatures cold enough to cause damage in that short time lol. I did an online quote from UPS but they only let you choose from 2nd or next day air. Which range from $200-$280.. Which is obviously out of the question lol.

Do you happen to know what the cost may be for ground? I've never had to ship a ball before.

I would say in the $40-50 range by my calculations.

$40-50 sounds about right.  Biggest problem will finding a box.  You'll want to ship everything together.  The tote is considered oversized, so shipping is based on the size of the box and not weight.  When I looked at shipping one across the country it was about $30-40,  To add 3 balls only added another $10-20.  Not sure if the UPS store will have a box.  You can always get creative with packaging or spend some time shopping looking for something cheap in a box that will work.

Check the bag.  I've checked mine numerous times with no problems.

I check my equipment when I went to Super School last year with no problems. You can get a "bag" that is really just a cover for a four ball box like your pro shop receives new balls in. The cover is pretty cheap and makes the 4 ball box into luggage. I did have to pay $50 though.

Ask your pro shop to save you a four ball shipping box and 4 individual ball boxes. That is the way to go.
