Coming Back to Bowling

This summer I have a friend who will be bowling on my team who has not bowled in 4 or 5 years. He has no equipment and is looking to get a few pieces but has no idea what to get. I will try to give you some guestimated stats from my memory. I would say he was a right handed tweener about 300 revs speed between 16-18 average around 220-225 when he left the game.
I would really appreciate all suggestions.

Your friend is similar to myself where I came back after a layoff too.  Glad to see him back.  Here some ideas that could work as it seems your friend has a similar game to me.

 

From Storm, the Virtual Gravity Nano is absolutely a great ball on heavy oil.  It's strong but layouts can help tame the backend.  Absolutely a great ball for heavy volume.  Also, I could recommend a Storm Anarchy pearl for medium-heavy and the Storm Virtual Road is a great pearl ball that works well with medium conditions.

 

In addition, Roto Grip (sister company to Storm) makes a lot of great equipment that is priced well.  For medium conditions, the Nomad Dagger hybrid is a nice choice, giving the benefits of pearl and solid with preventing some of the overreaction.  Also, the Rising Star hybrid is a great ball for medium-dry conditions.  Again, the hybrid helps blend out the conditions and gives a predictable reaction.

 

Even though I use Storm/Roto Grip in my arsenal, 900 Global/AMF also has some great equipment out there.  I would recommend the Bank or OMG! solid (heavy), Bank Pearl or Shred-It hybrid (medium-heavy), the Favorite (solid), Long Shot (pearl)  or Double Clutch (solid) for medium oil, and then the new Hook (solid or pearl) or Smoke (pearl) for lighter conditions. 
 

Now these are just suggestions, but those would give a good start.  I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions from Track/Ebonite/Columbia/Hammer, Brunswick and the other brands.  The good thing is that all of the brands produce great equipment to work with today.  My advice would be to stop in a bowling alley during league night if possible to see what some others are throwing.  In addition, some pro shops now have test balls with interchangeable grips that allow people to throw them before buying.  If your friend has that nearby, that is definitely a must.  Finally, the manufacturers have demo days and those are also a great chance to throw before buying.

I just started summer league after about a 3-4 yr break.  There is so much equipment out there it's really hard to say what will work best for him.

 

What I did was getting a used ball from the proshop.  I picked a Storm Barbed Wire simply because it was a weak ball, and it was only $80 out the door.  Now the proshop has some basic measurements so I know what pitches to tweak.  I know I need some reverse in the fingers next time he drills something up.

 

As far as the eqauipment itself, after the initial ball, he will have something to compare his next purchase to.  Plus, this ball can also be used as a spare ball.

im not to familiar with track i have been throwing Seismic exclusively the last year or so i am kind of ignorant to what track has out there but i know our pro shop carries a lot of Track. so any suggestions on Track would be really helpful

for Track i would look at the 715T for heavy oil --- if he likes a skid /flip type reaction then look at the 607A SE for the "ths"  --- if not  a 505T would also be a great option. for a pearl cover look at the 718A.  --- if you want to look at Columbia - i strongly suggest an Out Burst - gets down the lane easy with a nice strong arcing motion to the pocket and great for oil

I'll echo what Ten Back is saying as I hear really good things about all the balls he mentioned, especially the 505T and the 718A.

Outburst/Burst would be a good combo as well, with the added bonus of not being so hard on the wallet (relatively speaking).
