Rules Question
« on: February 09, 2005, 01:31:11 AM »

In league play, can you just take a ball and throw it down the lane without even getting on the approach?  I was thinking this was illegal, but was told it wasn't.

Sure, but why would you want to do that?  It's legal to release the ball anywhere, as long it's on your lane and you don't foul.

I wouldn't recommend it.  My old roommate almost killed a guy because he decided he didn't want walk up on the approach.  My room mate was playing deep so the jerk almost hit him with the ball.

I just think it would be considered an attempt to manipulate your handicap and be considered a form of sandbagging.

We had a guy on my team who was struggling to shoot 160s.  The last game he rolls the ball while standing off the approach and shoots 189.

I've seen a guy shot in the 260's doing that.  For whatever reason, he's much more accurate hitting the pocket from back there, than at the line.  Very strange, but true.  He'll struggle through the night, get frustrated and start heaving from the back of the approach and bowl his best games of the night.  This is not a one time thing either.

I don't know the actual rule, but if you don't thoroughly wipe off the ball first, you'll be getting lane oil all over the approach.  You'll probably have several people on the pair who will take issue with it.
