Randomn scoring change idea
« on: December 08, 2011, 11:55:55 AM »
I have coached youth bowling for going on 12 years now, and I started thinking recently about a score change for youth bowlers.

What are your thoughts on bonus pins at the end of the game if a youth bowler throws a clean game? Or does changing the standard scoring system to a 310 or 320 max to much of a change for the old timers to handle?

I just don't think our kids always see the incentive of why spares are more important than strikes to their overall development and I think adding this to the equation would provide incentive for them to spend more time on their overall spare shooting ability.

If you give them a scoring bonus as kids they'll grow up expecting it as adults!! When they see that they get beat by a few pins and they miss spares, make sure to explain how much the spares cost them!!

Train a child up in the way they should go and when they are old they will do some "Damn Good Bowling", be a "DV8" and not turn from it, besides bowling starts with a Big B!

Another way of showing the importance of spares is showing them what there scores would have been.

Say if the bowler had 4 opens, break down what there scores would have been with just 3, 2,1, and 0 opens. Then they can have a much better idea of how big an impact spares really are. Especially on games or nights when they are struggling to strike.

Second that. Do not change the rules of the basic game, unless you invent something completely off from normal scoring but rewards a clean game/closed frame.

I meant as a special format. Not changing the game entirely. We already do this in our youth leagues where we do a non-scoring sport pattern week so they can gauge their progress on tougher conditions. We would do this is a once every few weeks bonus event. The bonus pins would not be counted towards their average, but would be counted towards the wins and loss totals.

I heard of a new scoring system a year or two ago (Petraglia System I think it was called?).  I think I heard it used at a womens PBA event or something as well.  It's just like golf and extremely simple.  Record the number of balls it takes to knock down all 10 pins each frame, for ten frames (10th frame is treated like all other frames).  So a "perfect game" would be 10 (all strikes).  If you leave a 7 pin and it takes 4 attempts to pick it, your score for that frame will be 5, so it's very rewarding to good spare shooters.

Though I'm not sure how to work it with the bowling alley to not sweep away the pins after the second shot...

Not a bad idea to try that system. I think we'd have to do a special event and turn of the scoring machines, but it could prove interesting.

We have a lot of mini in-league scholarship tournaments and it would provide an interesting format.

This isn't an actual scoring idea, but it is a way to put a better perspective on spare shooting. In a scratch league last year, we had what was referred to as a "P" point. (No idea where P came from or why it was called that) We bowled on the Red, White and Blue patterns. You got a P point for a clean game, so even if you lost your point for the game, you got a point for the clean game. At the end of the year, P points were paid separately than game points, but they did count for seeding in the roll-off.

Bad idea.  Period.  Scoring system is the scoring system.  As said before, teach them how important spares are.  Show them what the score would be without them and drum into their heads that nobody has averaged 300 for a year yet and probably won't.
