How's your state for tournament bowling
« on: November 01, 2020, 09:10:04 PM »
I'm trying to get a feel for how all the states are represented in bowling.

What state do you live in and how's the tournament scene? Mostly looking for what state has the most action.. I have a friend who lives in Southern California and he says you can find a tournament every weekend but I'll never move back to California...

In Wisconsin, the tournaments I bowl in are:

City Tournament
WI State Tournament
Elks WI State Tournament
Elks National Tournament (held in a different state each year)
Summer Badger State Games
Winter Badger State Games
Thunderbird Lanes Handicap Sweeper
Thunderbird Lanes Scratch Sweeper

I heard Wisconsin is pretty good for bowling.. How many scratch tournaments do they have? In Oregon, we have the OBA (Oregon Bowlers Association) I believe there's 9 scratch tournaments a year, one a month from August to April. Once in awhile I hear about 7 gamers but I don't know exactly how often they happen.. And of course we have a few Northwest PBA Regional tournaments but I'm no way near good enough to even think about bowling in one of those...

No-one said this site is declining. But you also have to realize that with most states still not having any bowling going on, they can't report anything. So instead of complaining about the non-activity of the site, it may be better to be thankful that your state actually has any bowling going on.

For example: while Nevada has some open bowling, no tournaments are going on throughout the state, let alone leagues. All of Las Vegas is basically shut down, Reno and Carson City have some open bowling, but that's about it.

Certain counties in California barely have leagues going. Otherwise shut down. Almost the same for Oregon.

So it's best to not think of this as declining because no-one is responding because no-one has anything to report.

Pre-Covid, Southern California was doing pretty good.

Once a month scratch sport shot tournament club from September to June (10 tournaments) with 2 of the events being doubles. Had grown from 40-50 bowlers each month to 70-90 bowlers.

2 other tournament clubs started up recently (CBT + Elite Bowling). They are still hosting events currently at Canyon Lanes in Cabazon because it's open on indian land, CBT has also been doing events in Arizona, Vegas, and St George Utah. Elite Bowling which is Parkin's (Missy & Drew) Bowling Supply has also now scheduled a few events in Arizona plus they've done some "private event" tournaments in other locations.

San Diego area hosted a larger tournament about every 3 months I think.

This is not true at all. There are leagues and tournaments taking place in Vegas. Just as an example, ABT Fall Nationals starts tonight and goes through the weekend

So, you've been to Oregon and observed it live? I live here in Oregon and bowling is going great guns from all that I've seen for the past few months in the mid Willamette Valley. Quite possibly not as steady as before the Pandemic but from my observation, it's doing quite well presently. Personally I'm staying away from league play due to age related health conditions, but I sneak in as "the masked intruder" and observe from a distance every so often.

From what I've seen over the past 5-6 weeks yes, though I'll admit that my stint in Oregon has been no further than Grant's Pass. Lava Lanes is still hurting, as well as Roxy Ann Lanes, both in Medford. I'll caveat that by saying they were both hit hard from the fires, but when I was there, they were shut down, as the area looks like a charred pile of rubble from say, Weed to Talent. The fires there hurt the area badly.

Illinois is still doing quite well on having offerings pretty much every single weekend despite Covid.

Lot of "hubs" for play, Rockford hosts King of the Hills every Saturday, Joliet has 8 game marathons one Sunday a Month, Peoria has rotating format (singles, doubles, trios and team) tournaments monthly, The burbs do well at hosting some extra, and more importantly, there are a lot of enthusiastic bowlers that do a really good job of promoting and attending these events to help keep them going. Shout out to Jerry Marrs, Brandon Mooney, Joe Lichner, and Gary Sula in the off chance any of them hang out on here.
