Title: Rate yourself honestly, what is your REAL average?
Post by: agroves on April 05, 2004, 01:14:15 PM
If you weren't bowling in urethane days then just guess.  I think my real average is 190ish.  It could be closer to 200 but I don't know that for sure.  I averaged in the 190s for a couple of years using the old hammers before I ever used a reactive ball.

My current house shot average is 214 (highest) but I know it is inflated.  I can bowl par on most conditions.  Just don't give me long oil, I don't think I will ever bowl well on long heavy oil.

I would say my real average would be 200, as I average 191 in my current league and about 210-215 on a THS, and through my tournaments this year I have been around 200-205.

I did bowl in rubber, plastic, and urethane days, and my highest average was 176.

185-190 and i would be content if it was on real conditions. THS can make anyone look good through an average.

I have bowled in all three eras, Three Dotter, Carmel White Dot, LT-48, all the urethane covers, and now with the bombs.  On the THS that I only practice on once in a while I average around 230, in my home house (Twister pins, OB outside, hooking middles) average 204.  Shot 1687 at my first ABC last year, so I would estimate about 200 for real.

It's so hard to say as when I was bowling with Urethane / Plastic I was a lot younger and still developing my style and game.  Back then I think that I was averaging around 180 or so, but I was also 14 at the time.  Reactive equipment only brought me to about a 200 average while I was in juniors.  I've since brought my average up above 220.  Honestly though, how can you judge how much of that is due to being able to repeat shots, better form, more made spares, less splits left?  Give me some kind of conversion and I will let you know.

I did happen to bowl a plastic only tournament last summer and average around 205-210 and won the thing.  That's gotta count for something?

Well, let's see, depends what you call a true average and what conditions you're on and what balls you can use.  I currently average 202 (drier lanes), 209 (drier lanes), 223 (oily lanes and what I call a house shot).  I'm using whatever ball I can for the shot.

I averaged 175 back in the rubber/urethane days. I do feel I'm better now, not all attributed to the equipment.  But, when I bowled on a sports spot I averaged about that (173-174) over 2 tournaments (16 games).  I figure if I bowled on a sport spot more I feel I could average high 170's low 180's.  Now if I could only use a urethane or plastic on a sport shot I may wind up a little lower.  Who knows?

I want to have a 220+ average like everybody else around here, so give me fresh oil.

30+ years ago, I carried a 175 with rubber.  I completely missed the urethane era, so I have no idea what I would have averaged then.  I average 203 on today's THS.

I finally got off the wall shot last weekend in our association's annual tournament, where the shot they put out required a little skill to score well. 10 out was out of bounds; it was funny watching the ball skid down the lane if you got it out a board too far right!

With a little luck, I managed to average 185-190 on that shot, so I'd say... 180 is probably a good approximation of my current "real" average.

I average around 200-205 on our house shot. I average about 220 in the tourneys I go to.

I average about the same in the urethane days as I do now.  The urethane era wasn’t particularly tough to average well on. Honor scores were a little tougher to come by but not average.

But what is your true average?

…Your average on your favorite shot?

…Your worst pattern?

…Something in the middle?

…A combination of all the above?

If you gave me a shot that matched up perfectly to my game (my normal speed, turn, line, etc) I might be able to average 225 to 230.

If you give me a shot that I don’t match up well to then it might be 185 to 190.

I am embarrassed with my average. "Real" average would probably be around 155-160's area. Book is 140

My current league average is 200.  I'm tied with 1 other guy for the highest average in the house.  Granted there are only a handful of competent bowlers, but the conditions are far from easy.  Last year was 204.  Conditions weren't as bad and I practiced a lot more.  When I go to other houses with softer conditions, I'm closer to 220.  I think I could average close to 200 on just about anything.

To be modest i will give myself about a 160, seeing as im pretty new, and prone to messing something up.  I can shoot at or around 180+ in a 3 game session though.  But i can take the 160

My average on a tough shot is in the 170s.  A tough shot is like a sport condition, ABC Tournament or the brickyard I bowl at.  On a THS, I guess my average would be 200.

PS. It's the lane condition that makes the big difference in the scoring not whether the ball is plastic or urethane.  Just look at last years US Open and this years Bowling This Month Tournament in Reno.

My average average is 208.
If I were to bowl on a sport condition right now, probably around 195.
I suffer on a THS because of accuracy - it's a handicap on the house shot, but a definite benefit on the tougher conditions.

In the early 70's I averaged between 185-196 with rubber balls.  Urethane I was between 180-190.  On a sport league I am at 193 and on the THS, between 190-196.  I think my 'real' average would be about 185.

220+ on house shots, of the 3 sport leagues I bowled last summer my composite average was 186. So I would say I am a "true" 185-190 bowler on a real pattern.

My "real" average i want to say is higher than my book. I proclaim that my real average is at 160 (which compared to the rest of you god's not all that great). The book gets the last laugh at 150. I'm tryin new stuff to put a lil more revs on the ball, get more movement. by the time im done......it'll prolly still be the same. damn!

My average was a constant 187 for years. With changes that have been brought about in the last couple of years I've been able to move that average up. Last year my BOOK was 197 .. this year bowling 4 leagues in 3 different houses I'm at 205. If the changes DIDN'T COME ABOUT .. where would I be .. RETIRED!

I averaged 197 a few years back with a blue hammer, pink hammer, thunderbolt m/d and a rotogrip RH.

Then I discovered technology and sank to 190. Now, I am back up to 199.

I would say that my "true average" might be around 193 or so, but then again, if I didn't have the technology to cover my mistakes, I would try harder and probably average more....

Haven't bowled in a league since 1998 (for several reasons, mostly personal), and am just getting back into doing some serious practice for about 6 months now.  In practice I feel I'm actually bowling better than ever, which is most likely due to the fact that even though I haven't physically bowled in a long time, I am always bowling in my own private little bowling alley (my mind--yes, I am an AVID bowler, even  when not bowling).
From 1983 through 1997 my overall average was about 225 (and yes that does include the 1980's when lanemen were still experimenting with hand sprayers, and the advent of the "short oil", which initiated the Blue and Red Hammers--my all-time favorites).
I read all these posts of "higher averages" nowadays.  From personal experience, this has always been a pet peeve of mine, as this complaint has always been a constant.  True there weren't as many bowlers averaging super high back in the day, but there were always bowlers who were, and those who weren't but could (sand-baggers sound familiar?).
Let me stop my rambling by saying that the more things change, the more they are the same.  I still love this game, its eccentricities, and all of the eccentrics that populate this wonderful SPORT!
And oh yes, I think when I get back to bowling in league again, I will still be averaging about my normal.

Rigt now, 169 is what I think I should be at, but only 1 month ago I would have said 190's low because I seemed to be able to do anything with my old Columbian Spirit... but now I have a raging inferno and I am struggling..

My book average in one league is 137. Since learning a hook and getting some better balls, and learning alot more, I've been averaging 170's-180's+ for 3 months, consistently.

Right now im averaging just about 230 on a house shot, im 18, been averaging over 220 for 3 years roughly now, in my travel tournament club I was at about 210ish for about 150 games this past year so I guess thats more of my true average

First to answer Andrew's question.  Back in the days of hard rubber (before some of you were born ) my high ave was 195, so my "true" average is 205ish.

Now a resposne to Rdrvgs: sandbagging, in any form is CHEATING, and I don't care how you try to justify it.

quote:
When I acutally try I can average 210 on any condition, when i bowl in leauge I ave 193-197, why? I have been taught to sandbag for handicap tournys, even then I find it hard to compete, with people that are as good as me who get 30 pins a game because they know how to sandbag better than me.

I'm averaging 230 on Mondays and 225 on Saturdays (was at 227 but we started bowling on sport patterns 3 weeks ago). In our tournament club down here in So Cal (JAT), I averaged like 217 for around 100 games, and 211 in a travel league after JAT's, so I would say a "true" average for me would be in the mid 2-teens.

At the youth saturday league, at the local disgraceful 'we can't be bothered to spend money on oiling our lanes let alone making them high scoring' alley. I average high 160s, recently 180s though.

at the other alley further away it is usually 200+

Rather than put a number on it I phrase it like this

Age 20-25 plastic/rubber house shot 80% better than all the other bowlers (6 games a week)
Age 25-35 rubber/urethane house shot 90% better than all the other bowlers (12-15 games a week)
Age 35-40 urethane/resin house shot 95% better than all the other bowlers (9 games a week)
Age 40-45 resin/particle house shot 85% better than all the other bowlers (6 games a week)

Bottom line...."It starts to go downhill after 40"

When I bowl tourneys around 190 which get's you squat and I have never bowled on a sport shot as far as I know.

But get this I've been to Nationals once.  It was the first year in Reno with the stadium.  I came in averaging over 200 and shot 351 for singles set.  And somewhere my good friend Ken Shaw has the tape to prove it.  I think he files it under the comedy section!

Apalling.  Ignorance is bliss.

According to the PBA, a THS inflates scores 20 to 50 pins per game (and I definitely agree).  So if you bowl on a THS, you could expect to average 20 pins lower per game on a somewhat challenging condition and average closer to 50 pins lower on a tough condition.

What in hades is a "fair" sport pattern anyway?  How would a sport condition be "unfair"?

I'll agree (to some extent) with the previous poster who said it isn't the equipment that has inflated scores so much but the lane conditions - today's equipment leads to better carry but it is the lane conditions that lead to better pocket percentage and super fudge-room on spares.

On tough conditions today I average in the low 190's.  Back in the plastic and rubber era, I averaged in the low 190's.  On a THS, the sky is the limit - it is only a question of carry.
