RE-DRILLING BALLS?
« on: February 13, 2004, 02:03:09 AM »
Just recently I've started purchasing USED BOWLING BALLS. I've now bought three within the last two months and I'm happy to say I'm satisfied with all three buys!

My question relates to drilling .. how many times can you drill holes in a ball/plug them and re-drill? I've seen bowlers selling equipment where they claim the balls to be sold have been drilled a second time .. meaning the buyer would PLUG drill a third time .. Doesn't that have an ADVERSE EFFECT on the ball?

Hi Joe,

Too many variables to say, how much top did it start with, how many games did it have, is it resin or particle?  Can't nail it down to one thing, redrilling a ball doesn't take away the effectiveness as long as the overall look is what you want.  The only physical aspect that changes in plugging a ball is that you tend to lose top weight, plug is usually lighter then the ball.  I've plugged balls up to 4 times and it still worked fine for what I wanted it to do.  I guess if I had to make a recommendation, it would be about 3 full(fingers and thumb) plugs max and again, that's a total generalization to your question.  Depending upon the price, it may not be bad.  Hopefully you're not paying too much for the used equipment.

I seem to have good luck with used stuff as well.  I've probably told the story of the Code Red I bought for $30 that I used for 5 years and was my favorite ball ever.  Right now I have a Track Magic that I bought for $40 and have had it for about a year now.

Both these balls fit my hand with no adjustments other than tape, however.  I don't think I'd BUY a ball that I'd have to do anything other than tape or to drill out a hole a little more.  I do have a Beast right now that's on it's second drill... but it was given to me after it was plugged.  I NEVER complain about free stuff.

I would only think that it would have an adverse affect if the drillings did anything to the balance of the ball.  At some point you'd be plugging the weightholes, hitting the core, plugging the core... plus drilling a ball that many times has GOT to increase the probability that the core will separate from the ball, or of a severe, irreparable coverstock crack.

I couldn't find anything in the ABC rules about plugged balls being illegal, in fact it's stated that it's okay.  However, my dad said that back in the late 70's early 80's when he bowled, if you bowled an honor score with a plugged ball, it didn't count for awards.
