OK Bowling Gurus
« on: November 04, 2009, 02:00:10 AM »
I have wandered through the maze of bowling balls out there in the last couple of years. Now I need expert opinions on what I should be throwing. As you can see by my profile I'm a stroker in every sense of the word. I average 2teen and can hit the pocket a high percentage of the time. Corner pins are my downfall. As up the back of the ball as I am this is an ongoing problem. As you might guess I have the most success with earlier rolling balls. Everything I throw either has a banana shape reaction, or just skids too long and leaves 10 after 10 after 10. Check my arsenal and see if you can suggest any or all changes.

Pap 5 by 3/8 up
Gravity Shift: pin under ring,MB just right of thumb
Rogue Cell   : pin over ring, MB next to thumb
BW Pearl     : pin over ring, MB just right of thumb

What are the surfaces on your current 3?  What's the difference between "next to thumb" and "just right of thumb"?

With all seriousness if you have had success with earlier rolling balls, why not  drill a rico layout, or maybe do a modified rico if you are worried about tracking it too high. As far as what ball to drill, it really doesn't matter that much it is personal preference. I have 4 rico drilled balls in my arsenal and the roll is basically the same, some just cover more boards than others.

I also like the Rico layout. My rev rate is quite high and I just love the combination of early roll, and smooth continuation off the back of the pattern. You really have to do some homework on what drilling to match up with core and cover. There is alot more than just putting a few holes in a ball to achieve a desired reaction. Good luck!!!

From your stats you seem to be slightly speed dominant. Your success with arcing, rolly equipment undelines this IMHO. Your PAP also suggests a higher track and good forward roll. Your challenge probably is a rather thin line between "making a ball work" and "pushing it beyond its breakpoint", due to the lower revs (relative to the speed).

IMHO, your arsenal choice is good for your style. But if you face this problem generally, I'd play with the balls' surfaces and try to tweak them, so that you "spread" their utility - e. g. a highly polished BWP for lighter conditions and drying heads, a high grit GS for medium to medium-heavy and a matte RC for long oil (even though there would be more suitable setups for those conditions, but that's just what you have and surface changes are the most effective short term measures). OOB, I think there is amuch overlap between them. Arcing balls are not bad, as long as they "work"

Good luck, though!

Thanks Guys,
Many of you have responded to my plight and I am grateful. In answer to some questions. GS is 2000 a little polish
           BWP is 4000 and polish
           Rogue is 1000 dull
Difference in MB is almost touching thumb and 1 or 1 1/4 inches right of thumb.
Real question is, are there balls out there that will give me some snap on the back end. I carry so much better on a short, fresh condition when the ball does finish stronger.

I don't know, might be out to lunch,

but leaving a lot of 10 pins with a ball that rolls early and throwing the ball up the back with a high ball track indicates that the ball might not be saving enough energy to carry the 10 pin.  What are the lane conditions?  You have great bowling balls, but sometimes coming up the back is not the right answer if the oil is lighter or shorter.  If you have a strong move to the pocket coming up the back of the ball but not carrying the 10 pin, come around the side of the ball during the release to get some side rotation and it will improve the angle to the pocket with a little more drive.  this might not work on longer, heavier oil patterns, but it will work on most conditions that have a clean backend.  Also something that works is a ball with a higher pin and bowling balls with higher RGs, weightblock taller not the shorter low RG weightblocks.  IMHO.

Tuesday night I saw a stroker throwing a Burn and was really impressed.  It had pretty strong midlane, yet it continued through the pins.  It kinda reminded me of an Absolute Inferno.  I don't think I could throw one for fear of constant 9 pins.  If you are having trouble with ten pins, continuation is just what the doctor ordered.

MY PAP is 5 over and 5\8 up. Had a lot of the same problems you do.Corner pin after corner pin, still do from time to time.I got completely out of Storm equipment because it would mot match up to my game.Tried Big B did a little better (most of their equipment is early rolling),moved on to Visionary, great balls, great company, still have a few. Moved on to AMF and enjoyed rolling that equipment. The N code is mostly the first ball out of my bag. Then I found what really works for me, OLDER Columbia balls.I really saw my game jump.I had a lot of over under/ problems that made hitting the pocket guess work but from the first(big shot)ball it smoothed out my shot and has helped me be more consistent.I love the Bully line and the Action line. All so CGsSuK gave me some very good advice on ball drilling and what to expect.Jls gave me a lot of help too.Very knowledgeable men.At least in my case.
