There are many factors that will affect how a pattern plays. Type of lane surface, condition of the surface, humidity, bowling style, etc. To help simplify this discussion, let's say that the only information you have available going into a tournament is lane pattern graphs and charts (such as those on PBA.com). How do you go about utilizing that information to decide on ball choices, surface preparation, layouts, and what area of the lane to play? Again, to keep things more simple, assume that you can only carry a limited number of balls (say 4 or 6) and you will have limited warm-up (say 3 or 4 shots per lane) so you have to have a good idea of what you want to do right away.
The above is probably just a long-winded way of asking how to read and utilize those graphs/charts.
