The first thing i'd say is NO ONE is capable of never getting "lost".
That being said.......
I think sometimes the key is a complete zone change but that requires versatility which not everyone has. Hesitancy to move feet drastically and take that gamble of trusting yourself impedes this. Chameleon is a good pattern that can demonstrate this. My preference is to play 13-8 and find the right speed as I often do in league, but the LANE conditions often will not play that way. Sometimes straight up 5 piping it is where it's at...... or outside that is the ONLY way to score, but sometimes its 15-20 out with a manipulated hand and being soft. The ball is my read, and is the only thing that can tell me what to do.
From the description you have written 15-5 (and not knowing how you throw it, I am primarily a stroker bordering on tweener). It seems the pair may have been shorter up front and / or a thinner volume.
This thread should also highlight the importance of a true benchmark ball for the individual bowlers style. For me, the Anaconda will give me an idea of where i'm at as far as how the lanes are (should I ball up or down) and a direction "generally" on where to go as far, laterally.
But for me, I think the hesitancy of many bowlers to switch zones and make a huge moves (with feet and zone on the lane) leads often to a bowlers downfall....
