Pocket 7-10 -- What's the deal?
« on: April 20, 2011, 05:08:05 AM »
Over the last 3 weeks, I've thrown a total of 7 pocket 7-10s, all what appeared to be good shots to the pocket.  This problem has come out of nowhere for me, as I rarely seem to leave these.  Is this just some bad luck right now, or does this indicate something else, like maybe bad entry angle, ball speed, continuation issue, or what?

Just ask chris barnes from last week in 2 back to back frames that killed his chances of winning last week.

I was watching the telecast, and definitely felt for him.  Out of my 7, twice I had 2 in the same game.  Definitely guts your game.

More often than not it's due to a lack of entry angle or continuation.  I've left a few that seem to have plenty of both that are simply rotten breaks but those are far outnumbered by shots that simply could have been thrown a little better.  I view them as light 10-pin shots with a bad break having the 7-pin along for the ride.  There's very little "perfect" about a 10-pin leave as your ball has either expended most of it's energy getting to the pocket or is simply not moving through the deck with enough authority to kick out the corners.

Generally I would say it is a entry angle issue, however because you said this is a recent problem I figure it might be worth suggesting that it might be the center, be that you are bowling at the same center. When a local center here replaced their pins and did some work on the machines a few machines off-set the 7 pin, making leaving it with a 10 a lot easier, the problem was fixed and now carry is back to "normal"... but hey, who knows right, although it is most likely a entry angle issue.

Most "pocket 7-10s" aren't really in the pocket. They're half-pocket shots where the ball is really coming in behind the pocket and just happens to catch the 1-3. Sometimes, that hit yields a swish-zone strike; other times, you get the "pocket 7-10," which like the 2-8-10 is pretty much a product of the reactive ball era.

I left 12 of the things over 9 games in a tournament a few years ago, with 6 of them coming in the 10th frame of my nine games. Tell me that didn't have an effect on total pinfall.

If you're strongly in the pocket and leaving a 7-10, there's probably an issue with the pin-spotting, maybe the 7 pin being too far back on the deck, which is difficult to spot.

Put me in the camp for pocket 7-10s not a perfect shot.  I am a big proponent of watching the ball's reaction after it hits the pocket.  Like others have said before, it may be a late reaction coming in behind the headpin.  Or could have burned up and had no energy left at the pocket.  With good continuation, you should exit the lane significantly left of the 9 pin (for a righty), ideally in between the 8 and 9.

If the 7-10s just started happening, I would check the ball surface.  It may need a deep cleaning, oil extraction, more surface, less surface or some other adjustment.

For me, I view leaving 7-10's the same as everyone else, loss of energy at the hole..I.E. lack of speed!

But also it tells me that my tilt needs to be changed, usually I adjust away from a 90* tilt to more like a 60* tilt. This more than likely changes my angle of attack as others have mentioned as well.

I think you mean rotation instead of tilt.  90* of tilt would be spinning like a top.  --  JohnP

Thanks for all of the input.  Since this is happening at 2 different houses, that rules out the pinsetter, and I forgot to say it has been happening with the main ball I use.  It might be time to touch up the surface again (2000AB) since it has been about 20+ games since the last time, and the ball has been looking a little shinier than usual, so coming in just slightly behind the headpin makes sense.  The last time I touched up the ball, the 2000 pad I used had several uses on it, so I probably never got a true 2000 grit out of it, probably higher.  Luckily, I just restocked my supply of pads with Siaair ones, so I'll try a new 2000 one and see what happens, and keep the used one in my bag in case I need to knock the shine off by hand some night.  I know just from feel that the new Siaair 2000 pad feels more aggressive than the 2000 Abralon pad I had been using.Too bad I only have 1 night of bowling left out of the 3 leagues I'm in.

@JohnP: Thanks for the correction. You are right....I meant rotation.

But I also meant tilt, too. Actually topping the ball with a slightly spinning  rotation alleviates this problem for me, especially with my slow delivery speed.

I left the 7-10 in one game 3 straight , which I thought very good pocket hit. Even my team  got up and screamed, they could not believe what  they just witness. All I could do was just shake my head and laugh.

A ball thrown with high tilt may never get into a roll before hitting the pins.  If it doesn't, the ball will deflect.  That can result in 7 - 10's.  There are layouts to make the ball transition faster through skid-hook-roll.  --  JohnP
