Newspaper coverage: golf 977 inches, bowling ZERO
« on: March 03, 2013, 09:26:28 PM »
Isn't it ridiculous when a newspaper devotes 977 column inches to local golf scores while allotting ZERO space to local bowling scores?

Members of a foursome finishing third in a local golf scramble get their names published, but a bowler rolling a perfect game gets no recognition whatsoever.

Thanks, Gizmo. I think I get what you're saying and implying.

I believe that what you say about bowlers is true for too many of us, myself included.

Just adding length by moving the hole back further doesn't necessarily make a golf hole tougher. It's where on the green they cut the hole in relation to slope, bunkers etc. Length is a very small factor.

Just as in bowling, the length of the pattern is only part of the difficulty, the oil ratio makes much more difference.

As a non-golfer all I know is that there is a tee area closer to the hole for the use of lesser skilled (children, beginners, non-skilled senior citizens, etc.) and one further back for the more skilled players.

Actually I know they moved the hole around the green, but I didn't know it was for difficulty. I thought it was just to make life interesting.

Hey I was in that 4 some that finished 3rd in that scramble! Plus I did really nothing to help, yet my name is in the paper!

One has to look no further then the Pro Tours of each sport to understand why this happens, it's a popularity contest and the most popular gets all the sponsors $$$$$$

On the issue of playing the correct tee box for your driver distance makes very much sense.   Players play faster and hit the correct club into greens.

It really has nothing to do with less skill.  As players are either new to the game or get older they definitely can not have the distance that a PGA pro would have nor even a younger flat belly.
