Effect of Dollar on Ball Prices Outside USA
« on: January 19, 2005, 01:08:11 AM »
With the U.S. dollar being in the crapper against virtually every other major currency, are you guys in Canada, Aussieland and the U.K. seeing lower ball prices at your pro shops?

Just curious...

Errrrrrr, NO.

Bought 2 balls a few weeks ago, £170 for Zone Classic, £190 for Dyno-Thane Thing, that's US$685!!!

Crazy!

On edit, that's why I've started buying from US online proshop.

I know there are interntional distributors.  But what I don't get is this... why are they so much more overseas?

I've sold bowling balls and shipped them, and it turned out cheaper than if they bought them locally.

our wholesale prices have been changed and we have recieved a complete new revised price list for everything. the products that were released before nov 04 stay the same but the stuff after that is now cheaper for us.

on a super sonic, we were paying 101$CDN we are now paying 93$

the original velocity was 180 the maximum velo is now 160 something.

The problem here in the UK is that ALL bowling balls are imported by only 2 or 3 suppliers in the whole country, therefore they have the monopoly on sales and while they may give the occasional special offer or discount to the larger pro-shops most of the time the cost price to a pro-shop is quite high.

I work in a bowl part time helping to run the leagues and recently had to order replacement ball for a damaged one, we have no pro-shop but the centre can order balls in certain circumstances, the ball in question was one of the high end Storm balls, the cost wholesale to the centre was approx GBP120,this is over $200 at current exchange rates, and this is what the pro-shop would pay then they need to add thier costs for overheads, drilling etc you can begin to see why we end up paying about $350+ for high end balls.

Importing balls etc from US online shops can be a bit cheaper but when shipping, tax etc is added the saving is not a lot,the only cheap way is to but used as we then don't pay the tax,but very few people are willing to go to so much trouble to sell overseas when it's quicker and easier to sell within the US,and I don't blame them.

Sounds to me like there is a market to manufacture in Europe,..?
I spent 12 years there while in the military, and had a lot of local bowling friends. Sounds like nothing has changed,..why don't the big guys make balls over there, and cut out all the middle prices,..???

Hey Jim, why don't you ask Phil, and let us know what he says.

While D/T is not a big company, I'm sure Phil knows the answer to your question.

And if he doesn't, he can ask Bill.

Hey Jim,you are right and it's a great idea(especially if it was D/T as I am a big D/T fan and use only D/T balls). However I don't think it would be practical or cost effective enough for anyone to open a manufacturing plant in europe. So sadley we will have to keep on buying at high prices, unless of course our government has a change of heart and decides to stop with the punishing taxes we pay on buying online (yeah right).
