Real fine lane condition!!
« on: April 25, 2005, 01:48:12 AM »
Yesterday, at about 10 A.M., I received a phone call that informed me that I was bowling doubles and singles in the Banana Belt tournament that afternoon.  That was all well and good.  What wasn't so "good" was the right lane for doubles.  I've never seen this before.  About halfway to the arrows, from about the 2 board to the 10 board (right side) there was a joint where two sets of boards met.  The downlane set projected about 1/4" above the set from the foul line out.  You could see balls bounce if they were thrown in this area.  Plus, there was a noticeable "hang" spot just beyond this, that I attribute to the lane machine bouncing over it.  Took me a game to figure out a way to play around it (finally played on the outside edge with a weaker ball to combat the very dry outside).  I was Very impressed.

So how'd you wind up shooting on that condition?  Sounds tough - I'll be surprised if you were over 185...

Shot 608.  Somewhere else I posted that I shot 658, but that was in singles, before we moved.  I actually had a shot with my Uranium, playing left of the raised boards, but in doing that I generated so much out angle that I had problems hitting the dry and bouncing.  Had to get something weaker than the UPearl and stay right.

Having grown up bowling in military bases in germany which sometimes were located under gyms and basketball courts one particular house was 8 lanes and was devided into two sections, 6 on the left and 2 on right. There were huge columuns which supported the floor above and were so huge that you could not see if someone was up on lane 4 and there was a mirror at the foul line to view. Well Lane 5 had an foul line that was at least 2" high and for me, it was difficult at the time to release the ball that high. As well there was a board at 40 feet or so completely missing from the lane and about 2 feet long. EVERYONE on lane 5 aimed for that spot as for some onkown reason you would hit the pocket everytime. As well, lane 6 honestly looked like is curved down the lane starting about half way. If you were left handed it looked like there was only 7 boards to the left of the pocket. It sure make bowling fun. Many nights I would grumble and grumble. But looking back it was certianly an experience.

We had a house that was near a river and would it would flood the house about every 10 years.

Eventually the boards got warrped and they looked like the wiggled back and forth. It made for some interestin shots as your ball went into the hook phase and was crossing the grain of those boards.  The ball looked it stuttered as it hooked.

We also had a pine board raised at about the 16 board on the splices between the pine and maple pin deck. If you hit it the ball would jump up about an inch as it went into the pocket. If you where comin in too flat you got major deflection.

Very nice! Considering the lane condition, and the fact you were able to adjust that well to it, I'd say you did good.

Rags - I'm impressed that you simply stated the way things were, didn't whine or complain, and just went about what you needed to do to score.  Nice job.

Anyone here bowl the Peterson Classic?  I imagine the above scenario would be an every game sort of thing there.

I did ask the lane man if "winter rules" were in force on lane 12
