Real Pro Shop Service
« on: May 30, 2003, 06:04:25 AM »
On Wednesday before I went to watch the qualifying at the PWBA U.S. Open, I stopped in at my regular pro shop to pick up a new Inferno.  They had found one with all the specs I wanted, and I had given the proprietor my drilling plan in an email.  He was on the way to the U.S. Open himself, so he wasn't in the shop when I got the call from one of his guys that my ball was in.  We reviewed my drilling instructions and I told him to go ahead and drill the ball, and I'd pick it up in a few hours.

When I got there he had it drilled, but it didn't look right to me.  He told me that the CG was mismarked on the ball, and that it actually was as I specified.  I was dubious, but I wanted to get over to the U.S. Open.  When I finally checked the ball myself at home yesterday, sure enough it was not only not as I had specified, it was off by quite a bit.  Last night (late), I emailed the proprietor about it and he had responded by this morning and said to come in after I got off work today and he'd take care of it.  When I got there today, he already had another ball laid out for me and we reviewed it before drilling it.  There was never even any question of plugging and redrilling the other ball.  Besides that, he told me to keep the first one and test it out for a few weeks.  He said if I didn't like it, I could just bring it back and they would plug it and sell it as used in the shop.  He said if I liked both, I could have the original one for shop cost and we'd just settle it up later.

It was unfortunate that the error was made, but we figured out what had happened and the young guy at the pro shop had a valuable learning experience.

This is the way a business should be run.  Besides making this situation right for me, he gives me such good prices on equipment and drillings that I would gain nothing by shopping around on the Internet.

I want to give credit where it is due and tell everybody that this proprietor is Mark Robey and his Bowler's Aid Pro Shop is in Skore Lanes in Taylor MI.  I unconditionally recommend this establishment to everybody.

It's nice to see that kind of customer service out there.. BRAVO GUYS !!!!!

I had some guys around here think I was crazy when I punched up a new Deuce for a guy that was not happy with the one I had sold him the week before. He wanted a ball that HOOOKKKEEEEEDDDDD. Well I drilled his Deuce just like his Trauma ER...well it didn't work. The ball hit but actually hooked LESS than his ER. SO I got him another one, plugged his original one and sold it as used, then drilled the new one with a max leverage layout. WOW!!! What a difference. I only moved the RAD maybe 1" and the pin 1/2" but this ball outhooks the other one by 7-8 boards and hits 10x better.

Ironically I ended up selling the old one to his Dad for $95 drilled :-) It was timew he retired his XS anyway!!!

It's all about customer service...that's one thing I took with me from WalMart after my 5 year stint there in the sporting goods department. You can build customer loyalty by treating them right...it's not always about saving $1-$2....it's about being treated well.

I wish the service in my proshop was like that.  When you give them a ball you never know what span and pitch they will put in it.  They even drilled a friend of mines XXXL lefty (pin to the left of the middle finger with the cg in the center of the grip) and he is right handed.  Atleast they plugged and redrilled that one for free.

The sole reason I continue to use them if because I do not want to spend $40-$50 for a ball drilled up with grips and slugs, when they give it to me for $5-$15 depending on their mood.  But if they mess up much more I will stop and start shelling out the extra money.

When I attended the first BTM Superschool, it was at Skore Lanes in Taylor, MI and that was where I met Mark Robey.  Then, as now, he had a well trained staff, and that shop barely closed for an entire week.  During some of the classroom sessions of the Superschool, I heard from many people that they willingly drove hundreds of miles (!) to get pro shop services that they considered satisfactory.  Mark's shop is on the far side of this huge metro area from where I live, with dozens of "pro" shops in between.  It's worth the trip.  To those who are not so fortunate and would have to travel much further to get to a real pro shop, I would say that if your bowling (not to mention hand health) is important to you; put together a list of all your bowling needs, pack a lunch, and drive.  It'll be worth it.

Well, it sounds like I should give this pro shop a visit considering that I only live a few miles from his shop (I live in Dearborn Heights).  I'll probably end up going this week or the next.  My brother needs to get a ball, so maybe I'll send him.

If any of your guys want to give my services a shot, drop me an email. I am curently drilling for  several people out of my home area and all I have them do is ship me a ball that fits them well, I take the measurements, drill the new ball and then ship the 2 balls back to them.

I have done equipment for: axeweldr, sawmill, typhoon, jayriha, brian362 and a few others.

My prices are fair, shipping is reasonable and turn around time is generally pretty good. During the league season it is better but once school is out (yes I am a teacher, not a student) I can get to the lanes whenever I need to do some work.

Just drop me a line at dougsproshop@aol.com

Doug has done right by me time and time again, and I will continue to use him as my primary source for bowling needs. Can help with all your bowling needs, and can drill, and do any layouts you require...
