reasons for pulling a ball
« on: February 09, 2005, 09:41:28 AM »
for some odd reason, i cannot seem to hit my mark lately.  every ball i throw is 1-3 boards to the left of my mark, which isnt bad, but still irritating.  anyone have any guesses on what i could be doing?

First of all it sound like you are starting the ball in the middle of your body. It should be to the side, either lefty or righty. Take a right hander for instance. The swing is supposed to be a pendulum. Hold the ball to the right. Push the ball out, and let the weight of the ball swing the ball back it should be a perfect pendulum. If you start the ball in the midle of your body, you have no choice except to swing it OUT too far right. When the pendulum pulls back, it will swing out to the left, in effect pulling the ball. Also, never pull the ball down. Let the weight of the ball pull it down. Let Sir Issac Newton be in the driver's seat.

Something else to maybe think about is eye dominance. I use to do the samething. Started to look a few boards to the right of whay my target was for example wanted to hit 15 looked at 12. Just one thought of why you keep missing. Tenpin is onto something as well. The other thing to think about is timing. With out seeing you bowl it is hard to tell for sure of why you are pulling the ball.

Both good points, and I will throw one more on the fire.  Watch your footwork.  If your feet are going to slow and the ball is beating you to the line, you normally will pull it inside.  If you speed your feet up too much, your body has to pull the ball throw and you send it out wide.

If the first 2 suggestions don't work to well, try moving a bit quicker and see what happens.  I personally find my timing gets too slow when I am focusing too hard on my approach, and not just letting it flow.

I completely agree with what everyone has said so far. The easiest way to fix the problem is have someone watch you. Have them look for the things here that are stated, the only one hard to really see would be the eye dominance problem, that you sort of need to find out on your own. A coach can really help you out if they have the experience. Try things and work through them, you'll figure it out if you work at it, just don't give up.

One that most people don't think of too much forward bend at the waist.  Try this,  stand up and swing your arms back and forth and they tend to swing parallel.  Now lean forward and swing your arms straight they tend to want to swing closer in front and farther away in the back.

Just another thought...
You also may not be pulling the ball. You may be drifting left a few boards with your feet. I have a tendency to drift right (I'm a lefty). Your swing could be straight, but your body, along with your arm will be left a few boards.

thanks for the ideas guys, ill try them the best i can today and tell ya how it works out

but for starters 1. im fairly sure i dont start with the ball out off my body, so ill try that first
and 2. i may very well drift

im fairly sure its not footwork, because that was the first thing i tried when i realized i was pulling it.  i was bowling with 2 of my friends, and both of them said it looked pretty normal.  So ill give the other thoughts a shot and see what happens

Try opening your shoulders just slightly when you get set.  Then push out straight toward your target.  --  JohnP

1. If you are a 5-step bowler make sure your pushaway does not begin before you begin your second step.
2. Being off-balance at the foul line can also cause pulled shots - if this is the case you need someone to watch you to identify what in your approach causes you to lose your balance.
good luck

Damn, this is what I've been doing when I've shot bad and for some reason never asked anybody here or for that matter where I bowl.  I will do this tonight and post the results tomorrow morning.

Here's some more food for thought.....your shoulder is like a pendulum....if you swing it straight....it goes straight....now let's say for instance you throw down 10.....now where you start at on your approach keys into where you throw the ball.....and this is based off of your shoulder base and how wide they are.....put an imaginary line directly down the middle of your shoulder and visibly follow it down to the ground....now is that line directly over the mark you are throwing at....if its not....make the adjustment left or right to get that line directly over your mark.....now if you drift lets say 3 boards left or right then adjust your starting point accordingly this will put your shoulder where it needs to be at release...reason being if you start on 20 and you are throwing down 10 then you will actually throw down 12-13 out to 10 which if you don't have the ball reaction to get it back to the pocket will cause you to come up light.....so start out on 17 which with your drift will put your shoulder inline with your mark on your release.....hope this helps....
