Recommend a cheap cross-alley ball
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:20:52 AM »
I am currently pretty good at my cross-alley shots with my 1st shot balls by changing my wrist location and my release.  The issue I am having is that its just too much work.  I rather not have to think about changing everything.  I see some people w/ spare balls that just throw the ball the exact same way as their strike ball yet the ball is made and drilled not to hook.

Can anyone recommend me a good and CHEAP ball that i would use primarily for cross-alley shots.  Any online deals are welcomed!

Thanks

Agreed..

All plastic balls will react in this manner of going straighter.  But keep in mind when the lanes are drier and have more friction a plastic ball still will hook.  Especially in wooden surface centers (as apposed to synthetic surface centers).

Almost all ball companies make a plastic ball.  And they all generally run in the $30-50 range.  Some companies make novelty plastic balls though, that are clear or fancy in some way and those can be as/or more expensive than some of the performance balls out there (usually over $100).

I'll use BuddiesProShop.com to get you in the right direction. (most of these come in many different assorted colors)

Go on eBay. No one bids on tame stuff. Get a Scout or a Hit. Mild reactives. I just got a Scout Hi-Flare for $9.99. It was the opening bid and I was the only bidder.

Tell that to my pro shop.  I asked him a about a month ago to look for something on the weaker side for me that will give a little more movement than what I can do with plastic.  So far, he said all the stuff he's found and started bidding on, someone else has gotten stupid and drove the price up.  Oh well.  It's not a huge deal.  I have been struggeling with the ball taking off on the back end, no matter what I throw, but I'm finally starting to get some decent numbers up there-now if I could get a decent series, I'll be satisfied.

if you have another reactive you know you can do some "trick and no treat" with I would suggest a surface alteration...

Some car polishes close up the surface with PTFE and seal the pores... this might work.

I did this with an old plastic to get "off" the last little hook I still got with this ball... worked very good.

Of course the drawback was that it only took 3 games till the polish and PTFE seal was gone and the ball started to hook again... but that idea just came on my mind.

www.usedbowlingballs.com has Spare Tires for $49.95 and they only charge $12 for shipping.

You can probably get something cheaper than that, but if you want something fancy that's a good deal.

Most pro-shops that I have been in are selling WD and Maxims for 60bucks. Be cheaper the buying on-line and then paying to have it drilled.
