Recommendation?
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:43:14 AM »
I have a team mate that is coming off the worst season of his career (10 years).  He is a cranker, and the only real success he has had is with a very old Storm Big Hit Solid.  The stronger core balls seems to burn up on him and if they don't do that they roll out.  He is frustrated, and we are frustrated with him.  He tried a HyRoad, but that just didn't work at all.  Very over under. Not sure what other specs I can provide, his ball speed is around 15mph at the pins, but I am out of ideas with respect to a solid coverstock and a weak core like the Big Hit had?

Thank you!

How about a Cherry Vibe with a 5 1/4 pin to PAP, negative CG at 2000 abralon + Valentino UFO?

What layouts does he have on the Hyroad?  This has been a pain in the butt for me as well.  However, recently I went 85* 5.5 35* and took the surface to 2000+polish that I went 255-240-259 with last night on our low volume house shot.

As Good times already said, I'd definitely lay something out like that.

I'm not sure what the exact layout is on the Hyroad, but I know it is a short pin (1" - 1.5") and I believe it is pin under the ring finger?  I can't really say that for 100% certainty though.

What about something like a Freeze or a Natural?

I've seen recently for my style(high-end tweener with moderate speed), pin downs do not work for me on shorter lighter patterns.  Granted pin downs transition slower, but it does so sooner which makes it backend for me a great deal.  Pin ups(like my Nomad, fast, Mars and Dark Star) may react faster off the dry, but does so later which makes it more forward rolling in the back.

Once again, this is what I've noticed for ME...

Definately longer pin to PAP layouts (based on his PAP, this could even mean pin over middle finger, or possibly even to the left of it!) will get him more length and more energy at the pins. Combining this with a weaker coverstock/core ball will also help create length. If you do this, you can then probably use surface to help smooth out the reaction without creating super early roll, but the surface should help smooth out some of the over/under problems.  Something like Storm's Tropical Heat hybrid, or maybe the old Rotogrip Mars (hybrid) or Pluto (solid) might be good options.

I would suggest something like a Slingshot.  Core is very weak and the cover is even a little weaker as well.  Should let him stay closer to the friction longer without having to move into the heavier amounts of oil.  Sounds like he may be rev dominate so I would suggest going with something weaker if that is the only thing he is having remote success with.  If he is getting over/under with a HyRoad, a pearl cover with any core strength will only make it worse.  The only other direction he could go, is something like a Diamondback or Ogre Solid, little weaker core than a high end ball but a dull solid cover to help blend in the over/under.

Thank you all for your suggestions...he is grateful and hopefully his next ball purchase will work better than the Hyroad did for him.

Good thing too is, the piece that is most likely be right (whatever it is FOR HIM), will possibly be in a lower price point as well.  A ton of mid-price pieces out there with some serious hit too....

I just got information on a new line of balls coming out from Hammer on May 4 that might fit the bill.  It's the Backlash line, and you can see information on one of the balls at the following link (I didn't find anything on the Hammer website):

http://www.buddiesproshop.com/product/7467/Hammer_Backlash_Bowling_Ball_-_Blue-Silver_-_Available_May_4th.htm

They're using a new ranking system for ball strength that individually rates the strength of the coverstock, the surface treatment, and the core and then adds them together to give a ball strength.  Your pro shop should be able to give you information on the two balls in the line.  --  JohnP

I would recommend a slingshot, very easy length and controllable break point. Very easy on the wallet also.
