Alternating hands
« on: June 01, 2010, 09:45:51 AM »
I have an e-mail into USBC to see what they have to say but figured I'd see if anyone here might have some insight. In a scratch, non-handicap non-classified, tournament or league what is the USBC rule for alternating hands? I found in the rulebook that in handicap or classified competition is it illegal without permission. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

From my understanding, you need to designate which hand you will be bowling with prior to your league session.  You cannot alternate during the same league session.

in any sanctioned league or tourney, once you start bowling you must finish the set # of games with the same hand you started with..(switching during bowling the bowler will  be given a zero for the frame/s using different hands) if bowling in a league and you wish to bowl with a different hand/s throughout the year it must be told to an officer and stated from the beginning of the league year.. (unless an injury has happened where you can not bowl with the hand started in the beggining of the league season, and you want to finish the league off, this must be voted on by the whole league of captains).. hope this is what your looking for..

If a bowler uses his/her opposite hand to make a delivery during a game, what happens?

If an individual does not have permission from the league’s board of directors, a league officer or the league board would then have the following options within the timelines as stated in Rule 119.

Declare the individual’s game forfeited: The bowler would receive zero for the game. (Note: Scores bowled by the other team members not in violation stand as bowled.)

Declare the team’s game forfeited: The team would receive zero for the game. (Note: The individual in violation would receive zero. However, scores bowled by the other team members counts toward their individual averages and league awards unless the league rules state otherwise.)
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

Once you start a sacntioned event you must use the hand you started with, two handed bowlers must also bowl from the same side or from the same hip. Also it is leagal for a two handed bowler to shoot with one hand as long as it is on the same side as his two handed delivery.

He asked if it was legal in non sanctioned tournament play from my understanding..

I would think that would be up to the tournament director to clarify in writing on tournament flier.

if nothing stated I say GO FOR IT.

The reason that this is not allowed in league bowling is because the leagues are, for the most part, handicap competitions and people are rarely capable of maintaining the same handicap left handed and right handed.  In scratch leagues and tournements, it's allowed (you can even change hands after every shot if you want).

Where did he ask about non sanctioned events?  Please read the OP completely before making this leap.

The question about unsanctioned tournaments or leagues looks pretty clear to me.

OK guys, USBC got back to me and heres the official rules on my question:

There is a difference for leagues and tournaments.

In leagues, according to rule 118b, a right handed bowler must always bowl right handed.  Similarly a left handed bowler must always bowl left handed.  This is regardless of whether the competition is scratch or handicap or classified.

In tournaments, according to rule 328, in handicap and classified tournaments, once the bowler has taken his/her first shot, they will continue to bowl with that same hand.  In a scratch tournament that is not classified, the bowler may alternate hands at any time.
