One thing that I did to reduce my ball speed is I used to hold the ball up in front of my chest at the start of my approach and now I start my approach holding the ball down about my waist.  What this does for me is decreases my amount of ball swing and therefore I slow down just a little bit.  If I get on a drier condition where I need the extra speed to get down the lane I always bring the ball back up in front of me.

Move your feet closer to the foul line, since it tames down everything to stay in timing. Holding the ball lower than usual also helps (unless you muscle your swing, anyway). Just make sure that the changed swing tempo does not mess with your timing, e. g. footwork.
