Reducing strikes

Replace side boards at the pin deck with about 6" of soft foam and watch averages drop 20 pins per person.

Then, I'll resort to low flare high Rg equipment and roll off the corner...while the rest of you swing to the dry on a THS and wrap 6's around 10's.

Remember my topic a week or so ago on rolling off the corner on any condition???  Here's one reason you would do exactly that cuz of poor carry.

What if reducing scoring brought more people back into the sport.  Sometimes the answer isn't what seems obvious.

We have discussed that tournament entries are down as well as league participation.  I know that I won't bowl a tourney that is 80% of 210.  I would have to average close to 240 to win, if I am lucky.

If we reduced scoring the averages would be much closer and more people would be able to compete for the top spot.  I have heard a large number of bowlers say that won't bowl tournaments b/c they can't compete with the guns and don't have time to get better.

Charlest, there are numberous ways to reduce strikes, but what is the motive behind any endeavor to reduce scoring?

We have repeated over and over, only a select few favor any changes to reduce scoring, which in turn may drive even more people away from bowling.

I was reading yet one more post this morning about how "wonderful {this person} was to have scored so well" and it got kind of flipped a switch in me. So, rather than post something nasty and insulting ... Thus, this post.

If anyone else at all is the least interested -
I got one more simple trick up my sleeve that has absolutely nothing to do with oil or balls: make all the gutters their true maximum depth at the pin deck area.

These two items will do more than anything else to make people hit the {expletive deleted} pocket flush to get a strike than anything else, except removing one of the two voids currently in all bowling pins.

FYI both of these "tricks" (ha, ha!) have been "on the books" of most knowledgable bowling people for many years. Not one proprietor in the entire United States, that I know of, dares to implement any one of them

Putting 10 units of oil outside 10 works wonders too.

OMIGAWD! What a rich proprietor you must know to spend that much money to put that much oil outside of the 10 board!
(OK, so I got a little carried away.)

I was trying not to change balls or oiling patterns.

In the end proprietors want it easy.  They are the ones that want it as easy as pie.

Reducing scores? Come to Playaway Lanes, Winchendon, MA and you will see reduced scores for sure. If you can average high 180's/low 190's there, you will be an elite bowler.

ok, let's raise scores instead!  widen a lane to 47 boards and add another row of five pins.

perfect game score is now 450 and i'm guessing that even though you can increase entry angle with the extra boards, taps are far more numerous with that extra row.   and the splits! whoa!
