Release problems
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:02:26 PM »
I was practicing today in a different house with a heavy shot, well heavier than I'm used to.  The pro shop guy says it's light oil, but he's got a lot of hand and low speed so anything hooks for him there.  So anyway I'm trying out some new lines, down and in type stuff, tight inside, and the first track on almost every ball I throw is clipping the thumb and the middle finger.  I used to have this problem a couple years ago with weaker equipment.  With newer stuff on lanes that aren't flooded I usually track about an inch away, sometimes further if I'm playing real deep.

So what's the deal on flooded lanes? Is it me trying to get more revs and staying behind it longer?  Axis rotation looks the same, just the tilt that goes away.  I wouldn't think twice about it except I don't like my reaction when I clip the holes, it doesn't have much movement off the break.  Btw I was getting some good reactions on some shots, I just had to relax and make believe that the lanes were dry.  Maybe I need a shrink!

You sound similar to me when I release the ball.
Your probably tracking close the fingers and thumb
all your shots.
Its just that on the dryer shot, the
ball flares away from the holes more and faster.
When on the wetter shot it doesnt flare as much
and stays near the holes longer. So you see it clipping them.
The weaker equipment would do the same. It would be a lower flare
and the track didnt migrate away from the holes much.

I would agree with you except that over time my balls will develop a sanded area where my ball first contacts the lane.  Probably because I'm one of those hacks that sets the ball down hard on occasion.  I'm not dropping it, just that with my knee problems it's hard to get down at the line.  A couple years ago that area would be almost directly under my thumb, it has since migrated to the left an inch or two.  So I know my track is typically at least an inch left of the thumb.

This house I was bowling in really had me baffled.  They said the shot wasn't long, but the volume was much more than I was used to, and the backends sucked.  It doesn't help that my only ball at the moment is a polished RS-X that likes clean backends.  It made me really press to try and get some recovery.  My weakness right now is playing straight, and my usual 20 out to 8 wasn't working.  But it seemed if I played the 20-8 line anyway my track was fine, if I played up 10 or whatever I would track over the thumb.  I don't know if that happens to anyone else, but it's frustrating.

What you wrote sounds just like if I wrote it.

I got that same mark on the ball that you did.
Though I stopped getting it years ago when they
changed from wood to synthetic lanes.

I believe part of the reason for where its tracking,
is from coming up the back of the ball too much.
and when you get right more, its like rolling the ball
end over end. Which would keep it he track close to the holes.

I think what I'm trying to say is the thumb is coming out at 12:00
and the fingers are staying at 6:00 and not rotating to 3.

Also
Ball layouts with the pin above the fingers have
helped me alot. When ever Ive had a pin below the level
of the fingers I track even closer to the fingers and thumb.

This happend real bad with my black widow.
I wreote this in my BW review-
Layout #01-
60 degree layout Pin placement is 5" from the PAP,located below the ring
finger. Mass Bias placement is 3.25" right of the centerline, below and
to the right of the thumb hole. It's similar to the #2 (All Purpose)
drilling on the Black Widow drilling sheet. No X hole.

Ball with Layout #01 Review
This was the wrong layout for me on the Black Widow.  With my high track
this drilling caused me to track over the finger and thumb hole
regardless to how I released it. This happened to me once before with a
MoRich Labyrinth and a similar drilling on it. All most no reaction with
the ball on wet or dry condition. Very little flare about 1"-2". Like
the Labyrinth this ball needs to be drilled with alot of regard for the
pin safe zones if you have a high track! Follow the drilling sheet.
