Release question
« on: March 17, 2009, 07:06:13 AM »
Some one tells you are thumbing the ball. Why would i be doing that, How do I Fix it ?

My perspective of things : it feels like im unable to get out of the ball quick enough. my span is 5 1/8 and i have 7 /16 reverse thumb pitch and Zero left or right.

When that someone tells you this, is it because you are releasing the ball with all 3 fingers coming out at the same time and the ball looking like it's going straight?

Not having a completely relaxed thumb throughout the entire swing.  Look at Pete Weber at the end of his swing with his hand held high and open.  That is what not "thumbing" the ball looks like.

If you can't do this because your thumb hole isn't snug enough, I'd recommend Ron C's Magic Carpet on the back and one or two peices of normal white tape on the front covered with a piece or two of Valentino's Frankentape.  It may seem like a lot of work, but once you get the fit right you won't have to adjust it at all because the Magic Carpet is springy and will compensate for normal thumb swelling.

When you have the ball in your hand at the stance, is the ball sitting on the palm/index finger? Placing the ball there and keeping the weight of the ball on that spot as you push it out and let it swing, will enable you to stay under and behind the ball until release, at which point (without thinking about it), your thumb will exit the ball first, which will then naturally transfer the weight on the ball onto the fingers, causing the fingers to "trigger" or "hit" the ball as you follow-through toward your intended target.  Don't worry if you can't accomplish this right away or somewhat inconsistently in the beginning, because the long term reward will be a powerful rolling ball.

If you have to grip it even slightly, it's too loose.  There's a reason most pros use tape...it provides for a very snug fit that can be adjusted as the thumb shrinks or swells.  If your thumb always stays the same size and your thumholes fit sungly then you're golden.

If not, you might want to think about playing around with the tape some.  It's really, really hard to get a consistent release unless you're not gripping the ball at all.

It could be that you are turning a little early and/or grabbing it a bit.  I do both of those things when I'm trying to throw a little too hard, or trying to put a little extra hand into it.

Reducing axis rotation and focusing on rolling the ball corrects the problem for me.
