Removing Callouses from your bowling thumb
« on: December 30, 2009, 10:45:53 PM »
Hi guys.  After almost 25 years of bowling I have developed a fairly good size callous on the back side of my thumb between the knuckle with your hand and the joint of my thumb.  I know it is caused from having a thumb hole too big and loading it up with tape.  The tape on the backside of my thumb hole caused this callous to form and now I'm trying to remove the callous.

Any suggestions?

Thanx.

after you get out of the shower when the callous is still soft, take a sharp knife and scrape it off. or take your razor and trim it down

not really. Its dead skin.  and you dont CUT it.  You SCRAPE the blade across it. I do this about once a month to keep the callous from building up on my thumb. Havnt cut myself yet.

Best thing for this is an old disposable razor, double bladed at least.  Just go over the callous lightly over and over.  The razor will only shave off the dead skin, but once it gets down to the "live" skin it won't take anymore off.  Just like shaving your face, you don't want to let the razor go sideways or it'll cut you.  Also bang the dead skin out of the razor pretty often.  If the razor gets clogged, just use something skinny to knock it loose, like a piece of paper or a matchbook.

Emery board will work.
A finger nail clipper also if you don't cut too deep.

Get one of those Pedeggs.  They have a microplane blade which has worked well at removing the calloused skin safely.  I have a thumb callous that I will file down about once a week.  The Pedegg is one 'as seen on tv' products that actually works right.  Plus you can replace the microplane blade easily.

I use an emery board or really coarse sandpaper for the callouses that I develop on the sides of my fingers from not using inserts.

They also make a callous file. Maybe Dr. Scholls?

Also, after getting your callous off, recheck your span. I know you think it may be the tape, and that is possible, but I see this problem often. Nine times out of ten,it is caused by years of bowling with an incorrect, too long span. After correcting the span, the bowler is often amazed at how much more comfortable their grip is and how much cleaner their release is. And slowly, sometimes after a couple years or more, the callous diminishes and goes away! It is worth looking into.

This is what I do.
Soften the callouses first
wrap the 220 grit sandpaper around "highlighter"
then sand away

While it may seem excessive I am one of those power tool guys so I use a Dremel tool with a sanding drum on it.

My hands accumulate dead skin quite e bit due to the amount of ball refinishing I do in the shop (I know, just use a pair of rubber gloves while sanding and polishing...been there, done that) and all of the work I do outside. A Dremel with the sanding drum has done a great job.

It's quick and painless...<insert Tim Taylor grunt here>
