Title: Removing Finger Inserts
Post by: Urethane Game on June 26, 2003, 01:57:02 AM
What is the easiest way to remove any residue left behind after removing finger inserts from my ball?

Thanks!

Not being one to do things the easy way, I typically carve out as much as I can with a bevel knife, and then get the rest with a piece of sandpaper.  This usually gives me enough "clean" area inside the hole to glue in the new insert.

Pooter's way is kind of what I do, except I use a small flat screwdriver, then sandpaper. Result is easily glue-able.

They also have a sanding screen (they sell it at Wal-Mart) that I like better than sandpaper.  Also works well for tight thumbholes.

I use a small pocket knife or a *insert remover* for the job.

something else I found to work VERY well til the wife found out was a GOOD pr of fabric scissors. well they were good til I found em' The bevel on the scissors pushes the insert out and cuts very clean. (only use one side of the scissors)

I saw Kelly Kulik using what looked like a small screen on her thumb holes.  I wondered what it was until the sanding screen was mentioned.

I learned a long time ago not to get near my wife's good fabric scissors.  I don't recall her exact words on the matter, but they were something to the effect that if I were to use those scissors on anything other than fabric, she'd be using them on *me* next.  Given my dislike for...ahem...unnecessary surgery (to put it mildly), I've been exercising the better part of valour and using a bevel knife instead.

I finally broke down and ordered an insert puller from Bowler's Choice (www.bowlerschoice.com).  The "Insert Grabber" seems to work pretty well at extracting fingertip inserts.  You work it down on one side of the insert, then you twist the insert remover to cut through the glue bond around the rest of the puller.  It is a handy little gadget to have, although a screwdriver, pocket knife, and bevel knife combo works pretty well too.

Lol, I just use the roto-sander in the pro shop.  Course, I know not everybody has the luxury of having access to pro shop tools, but when you can get a pair of grips changed by a pro shop operater who does it tons of times a day for 10 bucks, I never understood why people would change their own grips other than maybe a time or availability factor.

Hamster, even though it isn't outwardly obvious, sanding the fingerholes with the bevel sander does indeed remove some of the coverstock in the fingerholes, which can lead to the inserts fitting even looser.  I used to not get too concerned about sanding out the fingerholes, but my newest ball driller is very picky about getting the finger grips sized right, and he only buzzes out the holes in 1 to 2 second increments between sizing checks.....and, believe it or not, I can tell a difference in the 1 to 2 second sanding swipes.

As for removing the super glue residue, I prefer to use a pocket knife, a bevel knife, and I've found that the razor edge of the Insert Grabber also does a good job of slicing out the super glue.  If you want to remove all traces of the previous super glue, then you can buy super glue debonder on the market, or you can also use Acetone to soften up the super glue so that you can remove it (Acetone will dissolve super glue)....of course, be careful on where you get the Acetone, since you don't want to use it on the outer coverstock.  Also, hand sanding the immediate area of the super glue residue will also work too.

Yeah, I get what you mean.  Once we remove the residue, it's just a quick in and out with the sander to smooth the hole out a bit.
