PBA colored oil
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:29:20 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has tried to color their oil at their local house.  Does kegel sell the dye or would you be able to just use some other colorant?  I bowl in a non-sanctioned sport league and thought it might be fun if they could do this to see where the oil is and how it breaks down.

I think the PBA should actually use more dye so that the true pattern shows up better on tv.  It still looks like there isn't any oil on the outside portions of the lane.

While it may sound nice on the surface, there's a not so nice reality.  Number one, the dye doesn't come off.  Of anything.  It will stay on balls, towels, shirts, and I'm really curious what it does to a lane machine.  Two, if they made it any darker, the bowlers would have trouble seeing the boards, arrows, and dots, and so I'm guessing the idea was out there, but they struck a happy medium.  Third, there really isn't much oil on the lanes at all, even heavy volume patterns.  It doesn't take much at all, so it may already be extremely dark.  Lastly, where the oil is and where it isn't should be very apparent by your ball reaction.  You will also be able to sense reaction changes before you will be able to see the changes.  Once you're able to see the changes, the lanes would be incredibly beat up or tracked out, so overall I think it's one of those things that really isn't as interesting, helpful, or useful as it's been made out to be.

Reports are the oil with dies goes everywhere and gets on everything causing equipment problems. I believe it ruined the oil machines being used....or at least enough they had to be sent off for refurbishing.

Not much good being said about the dye.

I also thought one of the limitations is that it doesn't show up unless there is something like 20 units of oil present.

So there is oil on the outside, but there isn't enough to make it visible.  I have heard (rumor and innuendo) that you need a ton of surface just to get a ball to wiggle on 6 units of oil.  So even if I don't have the numbers exact, the idea is that the dye doesn't necessarily tell you where the oil is not ... but only where it is plentiful ... or starting to deplete.

I guess a generalization would be that if there is blue present, forget about your ball hooking there.  If it isn't blue, then it is a guess, unless you know from rolling over that part of the pattern.

The dye is of no value whatsoever to a bowler on the lane.  It is only an interesting reference for viewers on tv.

I've said this before, but I am not a supporter of the idea.  The PBA professionals should PROVE that they can read the transition that happens with oil and struggle like we do.  To us the transition is largely "invisible".  If they're capable, then great.

Right now all the right-handers need to see is blue to the left (skid) and white to the right (friction) to find their area to play.  Leftys would (obviously) be opposite.

I know it's probably for TV and all, but I think it's a step in the wrong direction.  Just my opinion...

I heard the oil appears more blue to lefties giving them an advantage.  ;D

I cannot imagine any way that anyone on the lanes can benefit from the colored oil as far as reading transitions goes.

One thing I can seeing it being useful for, is during a single practice session where after you were done you could see how consistent you were.  If you wore a track in the blue oil 2 inches wide or 6 inches wide.

Possibly true, but only if you are the only guy on the lane.
