PBA Tour is on ESPN
« on: October 11, 2003, 09:52:06 PM »
Thought at first I had the wrong ESPN when I saw the beginning with the bits about Opening Day and video of football, so I was just getting ready to change over to ESPN2.  Glad I didnt.

Five frames in and Dave Ryan has already blown calls on two of Jason Hurd's leaves- called the 6-pin a 10-pin and called the double wood as leaving the 2-9.  Someone planted the bug re: the 2-8 and he corrected that one.  It would seem Randy's hands have been tied about being able to correct ESPN's plant in the booth (Ryan).

On drillings, remember that if you are drilling up a purpose ball, it is not uncommon to take stronger balls and drill them extremely weak...Machuga's pin was under the middle finger.

Just remember, though, that as long as he was not talking about post-match activities, it is acceptable in the eyes of the FCC

Smith's shot was awesome today. I had only seen him on TV once before, but man can he tear the cover off a ball. Funny thing is they said he modified his drill on the ball to "cut down" on the amount of revs he puts on the ball. My goodness, he's not human!!

what robert smith does to a bowling ball should be made illegal. it is cruel and inhumane punishment of pins. they have feelings too

Yeah, the Sarge Easter grip, he's used it for a while now.  Machuga used his Turbo Diesel ALL WEEK.  I only saw it out of his hands a couple times.  Think he threw a game or two with the Vicious Attack.  Hurd didn't get a chance to really get going.  Every round he'd break even the first couple matches, and after the 3rd game, it was history.  He was unstoppable.  He absolutely murdered Walter Ray and Bryon Smith.  He threw his Raging Inferno most of the time, although he threw a Bruiser one game against Bryon Smith.  Machuga looked a lot sharper Friday and Saturday.  But could you see the confidence?  Man, Leslie was right.  Looks like he's been there for years.  For those of you that aren't impressed with Angelo, check out the round of 8 scores.  He had to come back from being down 3-1 against Goebel, like he mentioned on the show.  I'm a fan now!  Also for those that didn't know, Machuga led the tournament going into the round of 32.  Lonnie didn't look too sharp, and surprisingly enough Robert Smith looked HORRIBLE against PDW in the round of 16.  If they'd have both been bowling someone else, they'd have both lost that round.  Tommy Jones and Tommy Delutz also bowled well enough to make the show.  Robert Smith was ON today though.  I honestly thought Machuga was gonna mow the field over.  I was surprised that most of them were playing a breakpoint a lot further left than they did all week.  Like Randy mentioned, there were a ton of gutters this week.  For those of you that don't have a tournament coming around to you, or that can't make it to one, get the Strike Pass, there is so much that you miss by just seeing the tv show.  I'm hooked!

Man!  I'm like the white Larry Bird!

I don't recall hearing Ryan utter "60 ft to success" at all today.

Smith was absolutely on today and noone else really got much going though Angelo made a great ball change.

Randy was making such a big deal about the exempt tour next yr and how that was foremost on everyones' minds. Yet when Leslie mentioned it to Smith in the post-victory interview, he said that he wasn't aware of it. Was that for real?

For anyone who missed today's show, it will be repeated tomorrow on ESPN2.  5:00pm Arizona time, so probably 2pm EST but check your local listings to be sure, since it is not live it could be on at different times.
