Bowled in a non-competitive work league this year. Handicap league, where it was common to see 150+ pins per game given/received (4 person teams). Handicap is 90% of the difference between total team averages. At the end of the year, it turned out that four teams were near the top within 3 points of one another. So, during the last week, position round, there was a possibility that any one of the teams could win. As luck would have it, two teams ended up tied for the title. But, it ended up being the first place team (who split with the second place team) and the fourth place team who swept the third place team. Equal win/loss point totals.
So the league rules state that in the place of a tie, the winner is determined by total team pins. A liberal interpretation of the rule was taken by the secretary, decided to use total team pins for the roll-off night only (rather than the entire season... as one might expect). But on top of this interpretation, the secretary decided also to "recalculate" handicaps for the night, as if the first place team and the fourth place team had been bowling against each other. The result was an additional 200 pins given to the fourth place team, overtop of the 150 pins they "earned" for their match against the third place team. The first place team had zero handicap for their original games and obviously zero handicap in the "total pins" recalculation when compared against the fourth place team.
End result, fourth place team won the league by ~ 150 pins... but with the benefit of a 350 pin handicap for the night.
I happened to be on the "first" place team that lost. Really don't care as its only a fun work league, but thought it was an interesting interpretation of the league rule.
