How many are bowling in them this Summer? I was lucky enough to get Livespive to bowl with me in a local doubles league. This will be my first time trying the Sport conditions. I thought it might be fun to compare notes as the Summer goes by to compare progress. I know I will probably be lucky to hold 170-180. Any interest, post here.

To enjoy a sport league, you need to have two things going for you:
1) a good spare game
2) the ability to check your ego at the door
I've bowled in sport leagues for 3 years now, and I can tell you that if you flag a 10, you're not likely to get that triple to make up for it. It's a grind, and more mentally than physically.
When I first started in the sport league, I was just exhausted at the end of the league. I just wasn't used to having to concentrate on EVERY shot. After a month or so, I was in shape mentally, but it was a tough go.
Enjoy it, and understand that 650 is a HUGE set, and you'll have a blast.

yeah Rags, I posted on your ABC thread. We're not sanctioning, but this is all Sport compiant or PBA patterns. It's going to be very challenging. I think it would be interesting to follow eachother through the course of the Summer. By the way, rots a ruck tonight, that's a demanding shot.

Bowling a "challenge" league that will feature a different PBA pattern each week and fill in the rest of the weeks with sport conditions. Not sure if that officially qualifies the league as a sport league, but it will be a far cry from THS. I'm pretty excited about averaging 20 pins less this summer, it is better preparation for the tough tournament conditions year-round.

The sport league I'm bowling in over the Summer starts May 19th, but only runs for 6 weeks at $20 a week. 3 man teams, winner gets a paid 5 man team entry into the world team challenge...something along those lines. I've bowled on the sport shot many times before and it's always ruined me. If you have an ego and don't want to humiliate yourself, stay away from the sport shot. If you ask me, it doesn't get any harder than this. If your spare game is there and you can toss a few strikes in with it, then you should be alright. Avoid opens at all costs because you can't count on coming back with an easy 3 or 4 bagger to bail yourself out. For an average, I expect to average between maybe 175 to 185. If I somehow averaged any higher than that, I'd be grateful. If you're not used to focusing completely on each shot, then get used to it if you wanna try the sport shot. All in all, bowling on a sport shot will turn you into a better bowler if you stay focused. You should be able to hit a mark and hit it consistently time and again. Also, throwing plastic hard and straight is the way to go when it comes to the spares on this.
-
After bowling on the ABC pattern the other night, I definitely realized the value of having a good spare game, and a tame ball to go with it.
Fluffer that sounds like some pretty good scoring for a sport pattern. Keep it up.
Y'all keep us posted on your experience as the days go by. Perhaps we can help eachother with the different patterns and such. Should be interesting.
Good bowling!

We are doing a singles sport scrach at Creekside Lanes in Winston Salem, NC.
It starts Tuesday May 11th, 8:30
We will bowl 4 games of match play changing lanes after each game. It't a ton of fun.
Those of you that are coming to "The Gathering" May 28-30 will get to bowl on some sport patterns. Maybe even a creation of my own...

Well we got the first week of Summer Sport league under our belts last night. As Pizzaguy said earlier, egos checked at the door.... well supposedly. We were told this was going to be the easiest shot of the Summer for us. Nobody on our pair broke 600. I really struggled with a bit of lane rust the first game 146; but came back strong the second with x, 9/, seven bagger, oops out of bounds missed the head pin, open, 239. Finished up with a 187 for 572. The Thing Returns turned out to be my go to, and should have been the only ball I threw, but I'm not that bright. I had to try three others in the course of curing myself of cranial rectimitus,(I've been battling this crippling disease for 41 years, so don't expect any miracles!). It's gonna be interesting. We did manage to take all 8 points. Me and Spivey, out there representin'. I'll leave it up to Eric if he wishes to reveal his numbers for the night.
j/k Eric!

Yeah Bowling the sports shot was a treat

Didn't do to bad first game 178. I don't know what happend
I must have grabbed my head by accident and threw it for the last shot in
the first game, but my transition game hurt (my head must have still been stuck
in the ball return from the first game
) 114 (ouch) then my head finally came
back but had a few dings in it and I shot a 166. Finished with a 458 I beat the
blind bowler score by 8 pins total
It looks like it is going to be a fun league. It will give me the
chance to really learn my equipment, and to bowl on tough conditions.

My league doesn't start until Monday. I was told I would definitely have a team, but my friend who was supposed to be my partner, chickened out. So now I get to try this sport league with 2 total strangers.

Good luck thong, I had a partner who backed out at the last minute and would have bowled with a complete stranger, except Live Spive bailed me out. Actually we were strangers till last night except for these boards. We're gonna have fun.

Kendog, thanks. The good thing is my coach is the one running the league, so I think he will be kind when putting me on a team. I am really looking forward to the challenge. I have really been working on my attitude and mental game. This should be a great test of how far I have come or how much more I need to do

Looks like I may get to go back to work and hit the alleys the 1st part of June. If so, I'll only miss one week of the summer sport shot. Hopefully this yars lasts longer. Last years the league folded in the 4th week.
Kendog: From the scores Eric posted, he must have been rushing the line, once his approach goes past 3 inches he loses timing.

I tried the 6 inch approach, but the approaches were to slick

Seriously though, I think I need to get a piece of rubber or something
and put it on my right shoe. IF Ken was watching I kept wiping it off
before I bowled.
Anyone got any tips?
Even with some sure gripping shoes my approach is going much past 12 inches....
SALT
This is a lot of mass to have to stop if I stick at the line
I have fell once and I won't do it again. Don't think Ohio could
handle another 10.0
If I stick I got two steps to stop before I land in the lanes
But like I said, on slower approaches It's about a 6 inch aproach,
not 3.

One thing I'm seeing after the second week of what I'm choosing to call a "near-sport" condition league - my equipment is all new. That is, I'm seeing reactions out of stuff that re-positions the relationship between most of what I have. Some balls seem stronger; some weaker.... Anyone else notice anything like this?
Rag - Yes, I've experienced this as well. The best explanation I can offer is to consider two balls (A and B). Assume that on "normal" conditions, A outhooks B by 3-4 boards overall. Now switch to a lane condition where there is a ton of oil at the "optimum" breakpoint (determined by ball cover, core, layout, and the way you throw the ball) for ball A and the lane is dry toast at the "optimum" breakpoint of ball B. We'd expect B to outhook A in this case.

My first night of sport bowling is finished. And yes, I'm going back next week for more

We had 45 people show up for a singles league, and with some of the regulars out for vacation, we might make the league max of 60 players.
The Shot of The Week is a 48 foot long pattern. I have a basic grasp of lane conditions, so if you want more details I'll try to fill in what's on this sheet.
We had our little meeting and then practice started. Just before the meeting ended our secretary made sure to point out that first, the patterns will be different, and second, to make it more interesting, they put 3 lb. 10 oz. pins in the racks. Oh boy
As for me, I just tried to do what I normally do in league, minus the 12-boards-of-area stuff where I can push right and tug left and still strike. I used my El Nino X-It (since it's my goop ball) for all five games, and I felt I fared pretty well. I only netted one 3-count on a badly tugged ball, but on the whole I was pleased with my bowling (and I only missed ONE ten pin).
I didn't switch balls because from the 8-9 board I felt I was getting a good reaction. I ended up shooting 211-162-170/543 for the first three, then after we were matched up for our bonus-pins matches I shot 204 to my opponent's 201, and then he got me 186-162. He got the bonus pins, dommit
I'm looking forward to the rest of the league. Call Monday Beginner's Luck, because I know it won't be that easy the rest of the way

1st night completed and, like White Dot, I will be back next week. We have 15 teams of trios. I was concerned about too many ultraserious big shots, not the case at all. Serious, yes, but there to have fun also. Many are regulars and a few of us newbees.
A moment of panic when I was introduced to one of my teammates. The 1st thing he tells me is he plans on us taking no lower than 5th place in the league. My 1st thought is, this is going to be a long 12 weeks. I later found out he is a 169 bowler on the THS.
The league format is 2 games of position, then 2 games of league competition, a total of 6 points per night. Since it is the 1st night everyone will bowl 2 on their starting lane, then move a pair to the right.
Our 1st pair had a fairly easy shot, not a lot of strikes, but makable spares. One open per game in the 1st set for 191-182.
We move and I wasn't as fortunate making the adjustments. The shot was somewhere between 10 and 13. Outside of 10 was OB, inside of 13 the ball slid and left splits. I managed 4 opens in game 3, 3 of which were splits. One of them the sour apple or lily
and I managed to put the ball nicely between the 5-10 missing both
I finished with a 139.
The last game I refused to hit 10, I either pulled it out to 9 or in to 13, both were not good places to be. I did pick up a few more spares and left a few less splits for a 154 and an evil 666 series. A 166 average, not bad since my book in the center on the typical shot was 180. The biggest thing was I did not allow myself to get frustrated and maintained a good attitude.

Well, back to Earth this week. 42' Master's pattern last night. 5 of first 6 frames bowled splits. Never could find a line to the pocket.
At the time I couldn't really say I'd learned anything from the night's experience, but this morning I realize I made a cardinal error of switching balls too much. I'm going to limit myself to three next week.
I did cover a couple of tough splits in the third game to scrape out a 166 for my high game. 418 series I think, which drops me to 162 ave.
One tough thing about this league was that we only got time for two practice balls. Personally, I need more than two balls to get loose. Maybe I'll try to get a game in before the league starts next week.

Well as Ken said it was 42' of pure enjoyment.

Looking back I realized that I haven't used my oil
game in so long that I was rusty. I was holding the ball
low in front of me instead of to my side. IT cause a few
acuracy problems, but nothing to major. Ken also mention
having to many balls. I guess I am kind of there to learn
what my balls will do, so I bring as many as I can
I will say that yesterday made me think about how I want to set
up an arsenal. I think I am going to go more with surface changes
more than layout changes.
I was bowling yesterday and playing a little with my schorcher,
but for the most part I was using my two charcoal executioners.
I started the first game with a 167, not bad. The ex was moving
more than the scorcher to me (must mean that this wasn't a true flood).
The ex was drilled label leverage and was in box condition.
Second game I was still getting a good responce from my ex until
about the 8th frame. I started to get a little to loose, and my
ball speed was getting up there. Very bad for 42'. Still pulled
out a 172.
Third game a switch to my ex drilled 315. I liked the read I was getting
except with with my ball speed I needed a little more surface on that ball.
I ended up fighting my ball speed that game and shot 138
I think I am going to get another ex and drill it 315 but leave it in box
condition, or even scuff it a tad, because I like the reaction of that drill.
Sr.
I went back to the 3" approach and the timing improved

I guess I should add my scores to this thread.
The summer league is using a 38 foot, forward oil only pattern for the first 6 weeks. I had a new piece to break in, a V2 Clean, so that's what I used. All I can say is when this breaks down, it goes fast. I started standing on 20 and throwing up 10, had a great line to the pocket. By the middle of the second game I was standing on 37 and swing 19 at the arrows out to about 9-10. Definitely out of my comfort zone.
Scores: 212-180-168-190/750. Had a couple of splits the second game, and missed 2 10 pins the third game because I didn't believe a Blue Dot could move 7 boards. Took 11 out of 12 points though.
Afterwards, I bowled a couple of extra games, used my dull Khameleon drilled for max hook, and threw pretty much straight up 5. Had a great line, must of thrown 7 or 8 in a row. Whether I can do that in competition tonight is another story.
More to come.

Well, this kinda sucks. Our sport league was suposed to start last nite. We had 6 people show up. So much for the league.
The house let us bowl for free though just so we could tell everyone what they were missing.
First time I've been able to bowl since the car wreck so I'm pretty satisfied. Shot was pattern E. Don't know where they came up with it pertaining to easy.
154 1st game, 3 big splits 3-5-7 frame, used my Pearl Bomb.
Switched to my Thing 2d game, 184, one open.
Lanes opened up 3rd game, shot clean 226, 564 series.
Unfortunately, doesn't look like we can get up to the 20 people the house needs to justify running the league. Its really a shame, all of us had more fun trying to find the shot and ending up with 150 games than we do when we just dump it right and hope for the carry.

Week 2 is in the books, and I have to pad my average the week after Memorial Day because the pattern will change starting in Week 4.
:ahem:
I had my highest sport game and first sport 600 tonight!!
I rolled games of 243-179-182 for 604, and finished 8th out of 43 bowlers. My next two games were 165-191/356, and my opponent shot 365 so I missed the bonus 30 points AGAIN, dommit
I had 960/5, so I won't complain too loudly. I like shooting spares on long patterns. I've only missed two ten pins in ten games
Oh well, it's been fun, and I can't wait to bowl the four patterns through the rest of the season. Here's what we get in the coming weeks:
Weeks 1-3: 44 feet traditional sport
Weeks 4-6: 33 feet Junior Gold 2002
Weeks 7-8: 53 feet modified 2002 Sr. Masters
Weeks 9-10: 40 feet 2004 U.S. Open
I think my Red Pearl Hammer might make an appearance starting in Week 4

Sr, sorry to hear about the poor turnout for your league. We certainly didn't have that problem here. I believe we have like 22 teams in our house.
One nice fringe benifit to sport leagues that I see already, since you mostly have serious bowlers, you get pretty decent participation in the jackpots $$$; nothing huge, but a few wins could cover a bruised ego nicely.

I was told last night that for the summer the patterns are PBA patterns rather than the tougher winter sport patterns.
Last night was a more consistent night for me, with the last game being the toughest. Games 1 & 2 were my fault, my timing was just a little off and I couldn't release the ball consistently. Since I only averaged 166 last week, they were respectable 179-164.
My timing was back for the 2nd set on the second pair of lanes, but I never found a line. 178-155. I did shoot 10 pins higher than last week and my average is up to 167. Unfortunately my team is still looking for their 1st win. We are 0 - 12

Well, 540 last night. Didn't bother to find out which pattern we had. I know it was short medium volume, because we never did get much carry down. Ten pins were really tough without plastic. My Blueberry fit the bill with a couple of release adjustments. I started with my Thing Returns, and I might have made it work, but it was just a bit too much on the back end for this short pattern with it's pin over ring and cg stacked underneath. The Blueberry with a roughly 3 x 6 layout was more controllable and gave me pretty decent carry. The release adjustment that I made was simply to keep my index finger tucked up tight and stay more behind the ball rather than under to take a bit of lift off. I'm slowly training myself to stop letting the shot get away from me to the right, my major weakness.

I bowled for the second week this past Tuesday. Can't tell you what the patterns are .. don't know. Very interesting shot .. ball goes three quarters of the way down the ally then starts breaking sharp.
I had my ICON with me this week and used it for the first two games. Shot 204 and 207. Adjusted my line today to throw the ball a little longer and harder and I was able to hold the ball to the pocket. There were quite a few WRONG SIDE strikes .. but I was close. I usually have LITTLE problem with the 10 .. didn't make one of the three I left.
The Third game I wanted to try my PARTICLE BLADE. Shot 140 .. it was TOO STRONG on the BACK END for me..
I have a few more balls I want to try on the SHOT .. figure I'll try two different ones each week. I'm not looking to come out with an AVERAGE but do want to spend my time LEARNING!
Having a GREAT TIME!

Joe that sounds a lot like the shot we had last night. We have had a heavy out of bounds every week. Once I've found a line, I really only have like a board and a half to miss right or you'll leave the head pin. With the short length in the middle you had to keep your speed up and cover only a mild number of boards.
I did try taking some notes last night and it really helped me focus. I simply jotted down my foot position, mark and break point with result. I think this could be a big help especially when the tougher shots are there. To me, when I'm struggling to find my line, I think this will help me to be more systematic about adjustments.

the Crimson really worked for me.

I have two weeks worth to report.
Last week was downright ugly. My spare shooting deserted me, and I had no accuracy at all. Shot 670/4. And I was lucky to get that.
Different story this week. I was coming out of the ball way too early, and a small tape adjustment corrected that problem. My spare game returned, only missed 1 makeable spare in 4 games. And I finally convinced myself to get my fat butt out of the middle of the lane and out to 5 board. You just can't play these shorter patterns inside (at least I can't).
Results: 189-204-203-184/780
Now I'm off to Reno next week to be humbled again.

One other fringe benny from this sport bowling that I've gained; with the ball changes that come into play, I've felt the differences between balls fitting more than before on the house shot. I've decided this week I'll try adding another change that has been too long in coming. I'm going to structure my practice shots to get a better read on the shot. 10 pin, 7 pin, couple of strike shots if I get the chance. I'm going to keep notes again as well, it helped last week.

Week 3 and our team finally got its first wins
We are now 3-15. I was about to start a pool to guess when or if we would win a game.
They told us they were going to toughen up the shot next week. Too many guys were shooting too many 200s. The oil would still be 43 feet, but they would change the pattern. Right now it is 43 feet with the heaviest oil in the first 23 feet. Unfortunately the lane oiling chart was done with a black and white printer so it was near impossible to figure out what they were doing.
Games 1 & 2 I was working on the things Ron had talked to me about. I was too focused on the pushaway and missed way too many easy spares for 143-152.
Games 3 & 4 I got into a more natural swing and was not only more successful in picking up the spares, but also in carrying the strikes. My release was smoother and quieter. 198-172. So a valuable lesson don't be over concerned with the pushaway

I've got a good report for my absent partner this week. We won 6 points! I had my first 600 of the summer! I won third game and series jackpots! whooohooo!
I did both of the things I had mentioned earlier, started with targeted practice shots, (little or no help at all) and kept notes. The only notes I kept were very brief and just to get started. Once I got lined up in the second game, didn't need any notes.
First off, I don't know exactly what the pattern was, except it was light medium length, a mild reverse block of some sort. I tried my Blueberry as well as my Thing Returns, minimal success. Then I decided to , just for fun, try my Roto-Resurrection. That ball really surprised me. Feet at 30, mark at 20 halfway between dots and arrows and out to like 15 or so breakpoint. This ball got pretty decent length, with a great backend continuous through the pins. Went 137,235,236 for 608.
I may try to continue with the practice shot routine, but I think the notes as well as moving further inside to get away from the out of bounds were the best help. I should be somewhere over 170 ave. next week. My goal now will be to see how close I can get to 200 before the season's over.

Week 3 was awful. Skipping a week (Memorial Day) and no bowling till league really showed up. My spare shooting was downright AWFUL, even with the White Dot

169-134-168/471 for the first 3, primarly with my X-It. I moved to my bonus pair and almost had a Century Award (not the kind a person actually wants)
215-117 (??). The worst part? I lost my 30 bonus pins by THREE STICKS, dommit!!
At least my loss number shrinks with every week
Highlight of the night: A guy on my pair during the bonus match (righty) managed to take the 6-8 out of a full rack
Next week we get the 33-foot Junior Gold shot, so I've dusted off my Red Pearl Hammer and I'm ready for battle
P.S. -- My adult/youth league starts next week, and I'm hoping to average 170 with ONLY my Ed, Edd & Eddy Viz-A-Ball

6-8?? thats very impressive! he must bowl with a ballon for him not to have taken the 10 out as well!

Week 4. 33-foot Junior Gold pattern. My Red Pearl Hammer hooked quite a bit in the first game and a half, then basically STOPPED. I was standing at 18 and targeting 6, and I think maybe carrydown (?) stopped the ball from hooking.
I switched to the Grey Wolf, and moved WAY left to stand at 35, and I was targeting the breakpoint on the lane by looking at the shadow of the 6 pin. My scores weren't great for the first three though. 153-193-156/502. However...
We changed pairs for the bonus match, and FINALLY!! I won my 30 bonus pins!
My opponent shot 160-161, and keeping the same line (stand 35, target the shadow of the 6 pin) I shot 204-234. Woo hoo!
I had 940/5, and I think that's my highest set ever.
I rather like scratch bowling. For my next trick, I'd like to win maybe ONE sidepot, since I've lost sidepots by 1 and 2 pins. I can't wait till next week to bowl again.
P.S. -- Thursday is when the adult/youth starts, and for me, it's plastic only. My son is so excited he's almost foaming at the mouth

Well i was in 2nd after the 1st week, i won 1, lost 1 first 2 game set and i won 2 the 2nd 2 game set for the 2nd week. Tomorrow is the 3rd week. Im averaging around 167 for 8 games total so far. Not bad, i brought it up. Were playing on a 35 ft. shot right now, going to 39 next week for 3 weeks, then 42, then 45 and 2 random...

After 4 weeks in our 6 week Sport league I'm averaging 181. I was at 167 for the first 2 weeks because of shooting 503 and 499. Kept trying to throw the ball too hard and force it which didn't work out. Over the past 2 weeks, I've just focused on hitting the right board and I shot 585 and 572. On the sport shot, I'll take both of those. My high game so far is 247. I could have had 600 both of those weeks because I had a good line for most of the time...just got tapped a few times. It's more difficult since we switch lanes after each game as well. It's a great learning experience and right now, I'm enjoying it much more than bowling on any house shot. The reaction appears to be more consistent and much less over/under, but maybe I'm just imagining things. With 2 weeks left and having a pretty good idea of what line to play, I have a feeling that I can finish up strong. My polished Full Throttle is what I have been using for the past 2 weeks and the reaction is great...very predictable. Well...good luck and good bowling to all.
-
I can't wait to bowl tonight! After a practice session from my worst nightmare the other night, this should be fun. I went to a local house which has a pretty good Summer special going on where you bowl a buck a game after paying a $3 cover. They were synthetic, with a flood and an afternoon of bumper bowling on them. Needless to say, there was no line that would play consistantly at all. After throwing every line I could with minimal success, I threw one final game with my Blueberry straight up 5-6 board with speed and up the back. 197 and felt like I learned something. So it wasn't a waste of time.
I tried the scoresheets MI 2 AZ linked above. I personally didn't find them that useful. But that is because I like to scawl and can't write in a 1/8" space. I'm gonna just scribble on scrap paper, it's just as useful for my focus. I don't see my notes as anything I want to file away for reference, just a focus tool for the moment.
Hopefully we'll be posting our winnings up here in a bit.
Later,
Ken

First time ever on PBA pattern-B last night netted a 528. Got better with each game as I got more of a feel for the conditions. Although it was a 43 foot pattern, it sure felt longer.

Kill the back row (or maybe this should read "quit missing spares, dummy")

We were promised a tougher condition and they delivered. It seemed like the lanes were in constant transition. It also did not help I was exhausted and had little patience, so it was not all the lane condition. 132-115-134-158 One saving grace was 230 ave bowlers were struggling to shoot in the 150 - 160 range.

Well we split last night. I struggled on this light pattern. I never did figure out what it was exactly. The ball would get down the lane, but very little oil on the ball to get a read on oil location. After several bad breaks and taps ended up at 492 I think. So I should be hovering at about 170. Seven more weeks to go.

496 but who's counting
As my partner said the pattern was odd. Had to throw a sanded ball to see any
oil. The oil was short and a tad on the light side, as I was able to start with my 315 Charcoal Executioner. I don't usually bring it out till the second
game. With a little speed adjustment I was able to play between the 10 and 15
like I normally do with that ball.
IT was a little warm so the ball stuck in my hands a few times oops

I don't know if it was the lanes or me, but they didn't seem to transition as quickly this week. First pair 162-131, second pair 166-192. I was working on slowing down my feet and it seemed to help. Maybe next week all 4 will be 160 or better.

2 Valuable lessons learned: 1) Never bowl a sport league when you are already wiped out and 2) slow down the feet.
Last week I was wiped out and had little patience. This week I was rested and was able to improve as the night went on...sort of. My coach told me my feet were too fast last week. So I have been working on it and was able to slow down the feet without sacrifice of my timing. Games 1 & 2 on lanes 17 & 18 162-131. I stuck with the V2 Strong, but might have been better making a ball change in game 2.
Games 3 & 4 on lanes 23 & 24 166-192. I switched from the V2 Strong to the PDW in about the 3rd or 4th frame of game 1. PDW tended to hold a better line than the V2 Strong which was more inconsistent at the backend.
Our team actually won 2 points and are now at 5 - 25

I actually had the same thought last week, slowing my feet and my whole motion down. I don't want to go so far as being mechanical per se, but just deliberate and under control. Let's face it, this whole game is repeatability, and the sport condition makes your weaknesses glaringly apparent.

I'd like to add for myself: "Eat something before you go bowl, Dummy."
I went to league last night and having eaten at 3:00 and nothing since, I bowled awful. I'm hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and thank goodness I keep glucose tablets in my purse.
We have one more week on the 33-foot pattern (YAY!). My spare shooting was fine except for ten pins. I also had the thrill of watching a guy who drew my pair of lanes shoot 298 with a Dyno-Thane Vendetta (6-10 on the last ball, and all 12 were in the 1-3 pocket).
As for me, it was not too hot. 140-163-147/450 for the first three, then changed pairs for the bonus match and shot 156-141 and won my 30 bonus points (I still don't know how I did that, either).
I'm ready for a 53 foot pattern in two weeks, that's for sure

I bowl on a 4 game doubles league that has PBA conditioned lanes. Right now they have a tough pattern A shot. I am averaging about 165 while having to change my form a lot. My high game out of 12 is only a 215. A 215 was my average on two leagues last fall.
The coolest thing is that for the first time in a long time I have had to move right on the approach.
-
Time for the weekly report.
I'm learning, slowly, but it's coming along. I'm not cleaning gutters anymore, I've learned to stay inside. Thing is, I'm not sure if this will help me outside of a Sport condition. 513 last night to hold at 171 average. I have to give props to my Roto Retro Res, this ball is my go to piece. Granted I'm not setting the world on fire, but, I see definite improvement a week at a time. Also, I'm gaining a much needed feel for my arsenal. I've discovered that my Thing returns is a great follower to my RRR. But back to the retro, you've just gotta get yourself one of these. This is the smoothest power I've ever had my hands on; it gets through the heads well, reads mid-lane really well, and once it starts it's roll there is no stopping.
Well enough of the Roto praise, The shot was again light medium in the middle with a heavy out of bounds outside of 10. I played feet at 30 targeting 20 a few feet in front of the arrows going fairly deep out to about 12-13 at the break with an aggressive backend. I had no problem getting to the pocket, but initially carry was tough. I just couldn't get the angle to carry and shot many single pin spares. The solution for me was to ad a bit of loft with good speed which gained me a bit of entry angle with plenty of energy into the pins. As always, it seemed that a board either way would take you either through the nose or into the 3 pin.
Six weeks to go, and I'm hoping to gain ground on improving this average through the end of the season.

Yeah,
Shot on the same shot last night. Must have been a
bunch of oil in the very middle of the lane. If I made
a mistake and pulled it to the center, the ball skated ALL the way
down the lane and hit the head pin.
I was able to play 10 to 15 with my 315 Charcoal executioner
again, once I woke up and decided to bowl.
134 173 163 My avg for the league is (or was I should say) 163
I'll have to tear them up for the last six if I am going to finish with a
decent average.

Bowled last night on a 42' reverse block of sorts; at least that's what I was told. This pattern was very demanding for me. Speed control seemed to be the most critical of any shot we've had this Summer. The slightest variation from optimum took you through the nose or into the 3 pin heavy. I found the inside line to be most playable. I tried my Thing Returns in the second game but found it to be somewhat jumpy and hard to control. I had the most success with my Retro Res but like I said, the speed was super critical as well as the accuracy as always. We won all eight and were sitting in 5th at the start of the night, so we should be sitting pretty next week. See ya'

Tuesday I shot 22x - 22x - 19x = 63x. Everyone seems to have shot a bit better, other than one or two people who really don't seem to have a clue. Not sure if the pattern is softer or (maybe?) we're all figuring out how to bowl a little.

I'm finally finished with the 33-foot pattern. With a mix of the Trauma and the Red Pearl Hammer, I shot 192-167-169/528. My bonus games were horrible. 143-146. If I have a good week in two weeks I could make my bonus matches even and be batting .500. YAY!

Tuesday I bowled in my SPORT shot league. Still searching for the right ball to use. Tried the TOP FUEL and the OnSlaught this week. Although both balls hit well .. getting them to stay consistent was a little too much for me. The OnSlaught had too much of a BACK-END for me and the Top Fuel just wouldn't hold the line. Adjusting is not as simple as it sounds on this condition. Shot 188/174/173=535. Next week I will try the EMERALD GREEN (I've never found a good shot for this ball) and the REMEDY (I don't see this ball working but a fellow bowler suggested trying it).
Although I'm not bowling WELL .. I'm really enjoying the condition .. look forward to the league each week. If you haven't tried it .. I think 90% of you would LIKE it!

I'd have to say, a lot of the scoring may have to do with the surface and oil type you're bowling on as well as the pattern. We have some really good bowlers in our league and I already gave you the numbers. I've personally had only one 600 so far out of 8 weeks, and I won $50 for high set and last game jackpot that night with 608 I think. I'm sure there is a wide range of difficulty that we may be dealing with between areas.
One other thing, as far as the breakdown on the second game scores. It seems like you sometimes have to think opposite of normal conditions in ball changes. In other words with some of the heavier oil patterns, you have to go more aggressive as the night goes on due to transition instead of less aggressive like you would on a house shot that is burning up.

Jimmy, my average in this league is under 180. I've shot 650 once, 63X once. Also shot a couple of 4somethings. Trust me it is sport compliant - the league average is 169; including a regional pro who normally shoots 23+ on the ths. Week before last he shot 489 (and he is the laneman). Thing is, even though the house is relatively new (about 2 years) there seems to be some pretty noticeable discrepancy between lanes and how they play. Every time I'm on the upper end I shoot better scores than on the lower end, and I think that's true for most. Be convinced or not, it is a sport compliant shot - I think you made some assumptions about who is averaging what which are wrong. No one is going to Vegas, with the possible exception of one guy. Look for a short guy with a long name - Rich Broderhausen. Look for him at the pay window, I'd just about guarantee he'll cash if he goes.

Well, this is the first time I've actually reported my scores.
Other than one week with a game of 238, followed by two 160 games, I've had a remarkably horrible scoring summer.
Last night, however, bowling on the us open shot, I had games of 211 (one open - a 4-9), a CLEAN 184, then a rough 155 with 3 missed spares. This was the first night we bowled on this shot (changes every 4 weeks), and although my scores weren't huge, I think they were close to high for the entire league!
The transition was puzzling, to say the least.
Anyone got any hints on this shot? I was in at 11 at the arrows, with 2 boards swing, with my Black Cherry Bomb. Had a great look until the transition hit.

Well,
I figure I better get this over with
Shot horrible yesterday, had a 428 (yes 428)
GOt beat by the blind bowler (450)
Shot a 94 (no, this is not bowling slang for 194), 147 and 187.
Last game was for pride because I was wasn't going to let Kendog sweep
me all 3 games.
PAttern was simple, it was just the bowler. short oil, OOB outside the 10,
and no pull room in te middle. Bad combo if you missed last week, and haven't bowled in 2 weeks. IT was hard to figure out the pattern when you were stiff
and inconsistant. By the time I got loose it was to late the damage was done.
By the 3rd game, I could have went 3 more, and probably shot about mid 500.
Kendog did good had a 207 167 181 555.
We would be deadly if we could get on the same page

I swear I wasn't going to say anything Spivey, I mean it.

I did waste a few frames last night. Very demanding shot as always. It seems like you have a board maaayyybe to the right or left to have a chance of hitting and carrying. Anyway, after a tough transition in the second game I thought maybe a move right with really soft hand might create some forgiveness, WRONG. I may experiment a little more, but for me, I have to keep good speed as well as consitant lift on the ball to score. The one reall bright spot on the night yesterday, was that I did manage to pull myself up by the bootstraps the last game to go off with a four bagger to win the game and split series after being beaten the first two games.
Again, I can't wait until next week. I think I may do the Fall Sports league as well.

What do you mean??
I stop far enough behind the foul line that you should be able to see.
Are you blind? lol
Yes it is about learning your equipment, and it has tought me alot.
Example, that 315 charcoal is the ball ball to use, but I think I need
maybe 1 or two more with different covers on them. That crimson came in
good, but looked like it would be to snappy if I pulled it, which is what I was
fighting all night.
Even though the purple dc was getting through the heads I don't like the
way a pin over the bridge ball feels when I throw it. This is the second
time I've tried it on a ball and have had no luck. Leverage is the best pin location for me. SO needless to say the Purple DC will be on the selling block.

Ok, not glorious, but shot 560 on PBA Pattern-C last night in our PBA league. Missed two spares in the middle game

Second league night on US Open shot. Flat, 40 feet.
163, 224 (great game - one of the best I've EVER thrown), then transition set in (UGLY), 6 splits for a wonderful 124.
Century award, anyone???

I've only bowled 4 games on that US Open shot (on wood) and I think my high was like 175 or so low was like 15x. As far as the line your playing Mumzie, I was told either straight up the boards where you've been playing, or 4th arrow swinging it. I tried both lines, but was too inconsistent to string anything together. I'd love to have 4 weeks to get the feel of this pattern, or any of these tough patterns for that matter. It's tough to see a different one each week.

If you think about a fresh, flat pattern like the US Open pattern, as long as the ball will hook enough (whether because of hand or surface or what have you) to get from your break point to the pocket, you can play any line you want to play. The trick is repeating shots as accuracy on a flat pattern is an absolute must-have.
If you have some bowlers working together to "develop" the shot by playing the same part of the lane, a flat pattern can be opened up to some degree. Even if you don't have bowlers working together, eventually the lanes will begin to break down and certain parts of that flat pattern are now no longer flat (more oil in some places less in others). I think that is why some people say that you must play a flat pattern on line-X or line-Y ... they probably had some success at one time or another playing to an area that had been developed/opened up.

A week off and it showed. I forgot that the adjustments on this shot are sooooo different from the ones for a house shot. 139-170-169-163=641 Games 3 & 4 should have been much better, but I got stupid in the 10th and managed splits 4-7-10 game 3 and 5-7 in the 4th game. There's always next week
We did win 3 of 6 points...our 2nd opponent was a no show

I also had one week off .. bowled lousy. The ball was going good .. I WASN'T. Shot 186/154/145=485 ..pretty bad! All my fault .. Balls (I used two balls) were going perfect .. I just couldn't get it delivered right. NEXT WEEK WILL BE BETTER!

I bowled in a sport league this summer. We just ended the regular league. Next week is our tournament. We also asked for a tougher pattern than last year and we got it. They put out three patterns. a 35,37,39. I averaged best on the 39 averaged about 197, the 37 kind of struggled and averaged about 189 that was the pattern I also shot my 139 and my 460 series
. Finally the 35 was alright struggled at first then I found that my TNT drilled stack with pin about rf cg in center with weight hole high was doing the trick for that shot. I averaged about 192. For the 11wks I average 191. I was pretty happy with that. I love sport shots but the only problem is where I am from is a city of about 50,000 and they don't like tough shots. When they put this shot out only about 16 of us showed up regularly.
-
Went again last night. TERRIBLE. In three games shot ONE DOUBLE, very few strikes and missed a lot of SPARES. I started the Summer off saying I was just going to practice in the Summer leagues .. but last night I was trying! Couldn't do a THING! Shot 476 and my team won ALL the points! I don't think anyone is bowling good .. but it's tough not being able to figure out the shot! I used the TNT and the Silver Streak Particle. It WASN'T the ball .. I COULD NOT get a consistent line!
I still would like to see this type of shot continue for the Winter .. but since it's tough to get practice lanes .. I'd like to see AT LEAST a four game set! As bad as I'm bowling .. I'm already looking forward to NEXT WEEK!

Bowled my SPORT LEAGUE last night. Used my BLADE .. ball rolled great. Shot a little better 542 .. still wish we were bowling more then 3 game sets! There's only 2 more weeks left and I hear nothing about continuing through the Winter .. starting to look around for a SPORT WINTER LEAGUE!

Finished my sport league last night. Final average around 180, might have been slightly more but for 2 weeks with a bad back. Finished fifth in the league. I'm now anxious to get back to the THS just to see if the last 13 weeks of torture have actually helped any. What the sport shot really did for me was to point up the (many) flaws in my game: bad speed control, not adjusting to transitions correctly or quickly, a few others. I did find out that I am actually close to as accurate as I thought I was. I also learned, as I suspected, that I have a "bad" arsenal. Because of my propensity to buy balls just to experiment I have a lot of stuff that does the same thing. I'm getting rid of most of my balls and intend to get down to 5 or 6 that actually cover the whole range. None of my big hooking stuff was of any use on our version of the sport shot - way too much backend for anything other than my middle range or less balls.
I'd like to see another sport league this fall, but I don't think it will fly. The same 16 of us will be back for more next summer, but I don't think anyone else in town is interested.

Dang 130 games are haunting me...I can't seem to go a night without one

Last week, bowling alone on my team 171-183-173- then the cursed 133
. I did win 2 points for my team
This week 191- the curse strikes early 134 - 159 - 178. On a positive note I am back up to a 160 nearing 161.

TP, I know what you mean. Probably 7 or 8 of the 13 weeks we bowled I'd have a 130 or 140 something with two 190+ games. And only once or twice was the bad game the first game. Transition and very slow decision making killed me.

Well the 130 curse may be over. No 130 tonight.
159-129-142-145 See no 130
If I had picked up that 7 pin in the 10th frame of game 2...well I'll be in Chicago next Monday, so I have 2 weeks before I find out if the curse is really gone

We bowled last night on the 2003 PBA TOC shot. 30 feet of oil, 50 feet of buff. Wow. Everything was going straight. First game 153 - 2 opens,1 strike, lousy count.
I got out my handy dandy note cards after the second game trying to point the ball up 10, and leaving one 8-10, almost leaving another, then almost leaving the 5-7-10. Second game 168 with 2 opens, 1 strike - better count.
I moved my eyes in to the dots, and the ball dead straight up 12. Boom. Boom. Boom. 222.
I think I'm gonna like this shot for the next 3 weeks!

Dangit TP,
I think I caught your sickness
135, 136, 143 414
Final night
Short oil clean backends, new hand position, all I can say is at least I was consistant
I used to tuck my pinkie, but now I think because of span issues I might have to change. I tried bowling without tucking last night, and it was different.
ALl and All for the season it was fun. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Well, I am glad to have this Summer league behind me. I believe I ended up like 168 ave. Even though I had in mind to tune up my game, learn to adjust quicker, yada yada; the format we bowled on just got to be a drag to me. I especially disliked not knowing the pattern we were bowling on. One thing I did learn was that the down and inners had a distinct advantage over the course of the season. Seems to me that hooking the ball is a handicap for the most part on these tough patterns.
On the other hand, if, as some have described, you have a few weeks to shoot on each pattern with information as to what you are bowling on; that would seem to be a bit more useful for improvement.
Thanks again to Livespive for travelling down to bowl with me. His unique approach kept it interesting to say the least.

His unique approach to the game, or to the foul line? I need to see this 4 steps plant and heave technique sometime!
Maybe I need to start traveling with Ron C and giving pointers
lol
Yeah Jason, you said you were in Columbus right?
I'll have to get down there a give a seminar. lol

I did foul with the ball once
Ball tripped the foul light.

I'm in NY this week so I missed my LEAGUE (probable made the TEAM happy). While away my RETRO was delivered (finally) .. although I was looking forward to using the BLADE again .. I now have to give the RETRO a chance. From what I understand this coming week is the FINAL week .. sort of SORRY to see it END!

Position week was Monday and we sweep this coming Monday. I finally had a week with no 130s and every game was over 139
143-153-141-167 and my team won all 6 points to keep us out of last place.
One of the teams wants me to bowl with them this winter in the same league, so i will be back for the same frustration for 34 more weeks

JAnderson - 480 on Pattern E?
I have bowled on A, C, and E.
They were pretty easy except that C breaks down kinda funny.
How are B and D compared to the other three?

Kendog,
Are you bowling in the Winter Sport league at Marian?

[whine mode]I wish I had such an option. We had 14 (out of around 500 association members) shoe up this summer. We might get the same 14 if we tried this fall. and they call themselves bowlers - faugh!![/whine mode]

Kendog,
The league meeting is August 30th and the first night is September 13th. Last year two guys showed up without a partner and ended up bowling together. Stop in and see if there is somebody to partner with. Didn't you sub in that league last year once or twice?
That league is pretty relaxed and a good time. My buddy and I are bowling again this year. This will be our third year in it.
-
I'm sure I could show up and bowl, I just wasn't really interested in getting paired up like that. I never did sub there last year.

Yep - 480 on E - that's what happens when you miss 12 spares on the night, 8 of which were single-pin spares. Of course, you too can bowl 480 on any of the PBA conditions if you miss that many spares!
I'll PM you some notes on the comparions as I saw them. That's a whole other thread.
