PRO SHOP OWNERS & MANAGERS
« on: December 02, 2003, 08:17:27 AM »
What are we going to do about Hav-a-balls
I don't know what everyone gets for drilling these menaces, but I don't make much.  They are destroying our business!  I need to know  how we can combat this BS and get them to promote the Pro Shop as well as the house leagues.
I am doing 94 balls this half, that is 94 $60-$70 plastic balls I will not sell this fall.  Do the Math, it's killing me.  E-mail me with some ideas at webmaster@usedbowlingballs.com
Thanks for your time

I guess I don't get what you mean by have-a-balls.  Are you talking about people showing up at the pro-shop that needs punched out.  If that is what you mean I know tons of drillers like to charge more for those to even things out.

He is talking about leagues where you bowl and get a free ball in the end.
I am not going to tell you anything you don't know here but.....
I guess if you can't get the center to price the balls up a little you have to sell the people up. They are not going to bowl worth a hoot with a plastic ball anyway. If they won't sell up now they will later. If you can get just a few to sell up then when the others see what the better balls do for the people that did sell up then you will get some more. You may convince a few that "Now that you have gotten your spare ball free from the league what strike ball do want to buy to go with it"? These people are your future customers and in some ways they are the best kind because they have not been educated by the wrong people yet so they may listen to you.

I know a pretty smart man that has been in the bowling business longer than I have been alive. He goes to K-Mart and places like that and tells them he will drill the balls that they sell for free. Yes he has to give a way a free drilling but he gets to make those people future customers. He knows they they will never go back to kmart to buy a ball again....not because he tells them they made a wrong choice (they don't know any better) but he gets to take care of them and educate them for the future.

Hey, a friend told me one day that he joined one of those have-a ball league. when i saw him one day practicing he has a new ball and it was the Black Chery Bomb. If these so called league you guys are talking about that bowlers get a spare ball out of it how come my friend was able to get a $200+ ball for like $16/week league? is that how much it cost for you guys in your house?

Most of the leagues are for kids and they gimmick some cartoon character every season.
I get $8 a ball to drill them when I normally get $30-$40 per plastic ball.  If I sell to 2/3 of the Hav-a-ball people, I still make more money.  I don't really care about Hav-a-balls, but why don't they do the purchasing through the Pro Shop?  The house gets a league bowler, PLUS profit from the ball.  And then the lady that runs the Hav-a-ball leagues (72 year old), sells balls secrectly on the side and gets me to drill them as a hav-a-ball for $8.00.  I think I need to get out of this bowling center.

I guess I don't understand why you would agree to drill any ball for $8. The ball leagues I've been in always offered like $10 discount for the drilling. But then again, I believe the pro-shop ordered in the balls also. Sounds like you're getting a really raw deal.

I am done with do these balls for $8.  It started out about 6 years ago.  Brunswick came up with the idea to promote league bowling and it was a regular plastic ball that you got.  When it first started, most shop would get $6 a ball.  The shops thought it was great, it was all profit.  Now with the addition of viz-a-balls, we are getting hammered with these things.  200+ balls a year a being handed out in these leagues at my place.  At $8 per ball, that is $1600 pure profit.  The house charges too little and wants to keep some of the profit themselves for running the league.  It is a lot of work to order them, sort them out when they come in, and keep track of who is paying what.  But I still should get at least $20 a ball.  If I sell to 1/3 of that league at my regular prices, I would profit over $3000.  If I sell to all of them, we are talking close to $10000.  THIS SUCKS and pro shops should get together against Leading Edge promotions to do all purchasing through the shops.  I can understand that Leading Edge probably would have trouble collecting 200 balls at $95 each with a pro shop. That is a lot of credit to give a small business.  The Centers can cover the funds before they get paid for the balls.  I'm sure we will work something out.
