Title: Resurfacing your bowling ball at home
Post by: machine35 on March 13, 2025, 08:42:02 PM
I bought some resurfacing pads to try and resurface my bowling balls at home..I don't think I did it right cause my balls are not hooking like they are supposed to.  How do I resurface my bowling balls at home?

I assume you have a spinner? You can dull a ball by hand but you really need a spinner for a resurfacing.

Depending on what you want to do - take something back to factory or completely resurface a ball that has heavy wear the procedure might be slightly different. Sometimes the manufacturer provides the surface instructions.

If the ball has heavy wear you can start with a 180 or 360 pad. If not 500 is a good starting point. Fully wet the pad and hit all 6 sides of the ball for 20-30 seconds each. Then go up the available pads (or not depending on what you want to do) doing all 6 sides of the ball each time. A good baseline might be 360-500-1000-2000-4000 obviously skipping the higher pads if you plan on leaving the surface dull.

Spinner is highly recommended, esp. when you have to do thorough surface work (sand deep nicks and scratches away), so that material is taken away evenly. In the worst case you create shallow areas - these might not be visible, but ball performance will suffer. And for a polished finish a spinner is a must, I can hardly imagine doing THIS "by hand".

Spinner is great but doing it by hand for adjusting surface works fine. Likely you used a grit that maybe not what you want in reaction. Earlier and smoother overall shape. Usually most people see that as the ball doesn't hook.

What grits did you use that you are not liking currently? What were you wanting for the ball reaction?
