Reverse Block with no oil in the middle pattern
« on: February 27, 2006, 08:30:57 AM »
How many have ever had a chance to bowl on this pattern. I went to a tournament this weekend. 75.00 to enter and last year scores are 230-240's so this year they announced they were making them tougher. I was figuring that is fine maybe 6:1 or possibly sport shot. Yeah right they put out a reverse block with no oil in the middle. They guy who picked the shot for the tournament said he wanted to make it tougher than last year. Well I agree with bringing the scores down but why would you even want to attempt to put this pattern out. This is also for a TV show qualifier. Lets just say some of the match play games where won with a 137 to 140's any spare on the left part of the lane was a guesstimation on where to chuck it. The outside where to oily to play with a plastice but the middles where to dry for reactive. I did make the show but he was saying this was a fair shot. I dissagree with that and was wondering if anybody else has every bowled on this kind of shot before. I am not talking a normal reverse block either. I have bowled on a normal reverse block and shot pretty well.

The mechanic or lane graph said it was a reverse block?  Many bowlers bowling on a flat or even 2-to-1 pattern will cry "reverse block".  What is a "normal" reverse block?  Either the pattern is inverted or it isn't.  I suppose you could mean a higher reverse ratio.  Indeed it is not unusual to see some very low scores on flat patterns when the participants are accustomed to the great wall of china.

Learning to convert every spare by going straight at them takes away the "guestimation" on tough patterns.  That's why you see the pros and top amateurs using that method.

They tournament director told my friend and I.  I am not guessing on this as I told you I have bowled on reverse block before.  but when you set a plastic ball on the second arrow and it takes the 7 pin off the rack you cannot tell me there was any oil in the center.

every friday night at league and its giving everyone fits. the only scores are posted by those individuals whoi are bowling straight and not expecting anything ,but to hit some pins . I am going to get my plastic ball out and throw up 5 this friday, nothing else works. Our shot is not so mush reversed as its worn out and the only oil left is outside 10. But its just not enough to use a strong ball .swing to it and the balls burn up trying to get to it play down the boards and it runs out too soon so u cross over, so its palastic up 5 and hope

Hell enough games of a flat pattern make it a reverse block!

Leland Lanes, Tuscaloosa, Ala. Bowled there for parts of 10 years and it was either flat or reverse every time I ever shot on it. Usually flat, but they only put 10-12 units out there, so it was basically a reverse by the time practice was over. Add in unstripped backends and it was oh-so-nice to try to score on.

I used to bowl in a league there and in a league at Bama Bowl across town. My average at Bama Bowl was consistently 30 pins higher, and it was not a cheese shot, either. I'm going down there on April 1 and shoot again for the first time in five years, and will report back.

Ah yes, the old "reverse block"!!!  That's our "normal" tournament shot...fun, ain't it???  Outside of 10 is OB...it ain't coming back if you get it out there...middle of the lane turns into a desert in short order...plastic is a must for making spares and/or going hard and straight on your strike ball.  This condition can give lots of bowlers nightmares...it did me...still does sometimes...

Join the club. My house has been laying a reverse block or something very similar to one for the last few months. People's averages are down like 20-30 pins. One of the best bowlers in the house averages 217 or so in a different house (your THS) and averages about 187-190 here. I'd say that's a big drop. I mean a decent 600 is something to brag about and should be deemed an honor score here at Slatebelt. lol

How about polished urethane outside of ten. We ran into a pattern this weekend of close behavior 10 game block crossing pairs and the center went out by game 3. By game 7 if you even started at 10 you were nosey. Had to start out around 6-7 and break at 2 using a flat wrist roll no head belly. I personally like to see a pattern like this as it takes away most of the bigger hookers and loopers who can't throw straight down the lane. Just determining the length of the break gets me with carry or over/under. Low flaring equipment is a great choice here also unless flooded.

That depends on the length and volume, the number of games, and how the lanes are being played.  Flat patterns do not automagically turn into reverse blocks.
