Your RF Span
« on: April 30, 2009, 03:43:17 PM »
Who has their RF span shorter than their MF and why?

For me, my span measurement shows that my RF should be 1/16 to 3/32 longer than my MF, but I seem to come out of the ball with more leverage and release the ball better with more revs with the RF 1/16 shorter than my MF. I don't know why it is that way, so am wondering about other pepple's RF span.

My RF span is 1/8" shorter, because I believe it needs to be.  I could probably decrease my MF span to make it even, but why?  I actually think my span is about 1/16" longer than a "relaxed" grip but I wouldn't call it stretched either.

As for why you like your ring finger shorter, it may be just be a preference thing based on feel.  I assume doing that doesn't make the span too short either.

An intentional dropped Ring finger will help to allow a bowling to lower there track... or spin the ball more.

However, if your proper grip Ring Finger has a short distance than your Middle Finger than this would suggest that distance between to last creases on these fingers is greater than 3/16 (Ringer being shorter). Or perhaps of some physical issue with middle finger such as arthritis, broken bones, less flexibility or some other ailment.

I have 1/8 reverse pitch on MF and 1/4 reverse pitch on RF. When I insert my thumb and lay fingers over the finger holes, it shows the RF should be longer, but even with the reverse pitch in the RF, the nail still hits the nail side of the hole slightly whereas the MF does not. When I shorten the RF to 1/16 shorter, the nail doesn't hit the nail side of the hole any more. I don't know if it is best to use a dropped RF or increase reverse pitch to 3/8" or 1/2". However, my joint really doesn't seem that stiff. When I bend my fingers, they bend almost the same with the RF not bending quite as much.

I use Vise Grips with the power lift (flat) side. On my balls that don't have the RF shorter than the MF, I have removed the power lift grip and inserted the oval side and this gives me a feel somewhat similar to having the RF dropped. Also seems to put a bit more of my palm on the ball this way.

My RF span is shorter than my MF by just a smidge. I have a pretty big difference in the crease of my RF and MF which causes the span to be that way.

When you lay your fingers on the ball, with your thumb in the ball, this does not account for any loss of flexibility in the fingers, which can or will effect a span. All these things need to be taken into account. It is nice to say that are certain basics, when it comes to fitting, but really they are merely generalities, as well as just a starting point. For many it is a matter of trial and error.

Brick,

Its about equal pressure on both fingers. Whatever you do, you should end up feel an equal amount of pressue on both fingers during lifting and swinging. Additionally, you should feel the pads fully while lifting. Amdjusting the pitches and length will give you this.

Ric, that seems to be what I am beginning to learn. As many years as I've bowled, a person would think I would know that, but unfortunately for whatever reason, I didn't, but I am now.

Pin-Chaser, thanks for the tip. I'm going to check out what I have now. Kind of like I just said to Ric above, you would think that after all of these years I would know that, but unfortunately I never paid any attention to the eveness on the fingers.

Unfortunately NO 2 hands are the same. Too many variables and that is why the proper span for you is not always the correct span, per sey by the book. And comfort is an important factor because feel cannot be taught.

That is why fitting is an art, more so than a science.

M/F= 4 3/8
R/F= 4 1/2

My spans USED to be the same, then I tried a ball with an offset thumb hole ( Yes, I know some people don't believe it exists ) which left my ring finger 1/8 inch longer than the middle finger. The ball feels great and I get the same exact feel on the pads of my fingers upon release.
