Old Stuff in the Arsenal

One of my leagues has a condition that hooks like crazy, and all my reactive stuff quite often is simply too much for it.

My answer was to go to the closet and pull out an old Blue Hammer.  Sometimes even this hooks too much.

This weekend we were doing some cleaning, and I ran across a Blue Pearl Hammer, circa 1987.  Have no idea if it even fits my hand properly, but it is going into my bag for that particular league, and it will be interesting to see how it performs.

The funny part about this is that some of the younger guys have never even seen some of these balls.  I know I'm going to hear "What is THAT?" tonight.

Do any of you have any older-style balls that have found their way back into your bag for real competition?

People get hung up in the thought that new must mean cure-all...I've got the old poly RotoGrip RH in the bag as well as a Gold Grenade.  There are some gems out there if you look hard enough

My Stingray/c is great for when I encounter unpredictable backends. It's a sanded urethane that moves pretty well on dry to mediums & is super predictable in its arc.

I still use my red pearl hammer for spares or on toast.

How ironic!
I just drilled a Stingray I got from EBay, just because the lanes have been erratic and I have a hard time when the only shot is outside 5 and it is very dry.

By the way, it comes 320 grit and is the hardest ball I have ever tried to polish. I sanded it on my spinner to 1000 grit and I couldn't get a polish on it
for love or money. It is just slightly shiny now. I hope I can get some length on it.

I use a Blue Pearl Hammer as my spare ball. Last Friday I was tearing my hair out; so for the last 5 frames of the night, I went up the 5 board with the Blue Pearl and had 120 for those 5 frames. Can't tell how well the ball hit  because my strikes were all flush. Maybe I'll try it again tonight ...

Got an original Nail with god knows how many games on it and this is the first model that came out green. The later ones with a softer cover were bluer. This ball is awesome for the dirt. Drilled lev. and always polished, makes a nice move late no matter how dry. I think this ball/rock will last forever.
Still have a red hammer too.

He he he!!!! Old stuff IS my arsenal, Although the Omegas and the Pulse might be better off shined and kept for leauge only, whats left over and whats coming should get the job done

Triton Elite Pearl(enough for what passes for 'oily' here in oz)
Triton Heat(an arrow straighter, good when outside 10 opens up)
'Tude1(same as Heat, but a little bit snappier at the break)
Combat Zone(revvier midlane than 'tude1, a little much for my leauge shot)
Omega Lion(cant wait for this, hopefully up the boards and big snap like my old one did)
Red Rhino(bye bye 10 pins!)

This past fall it was my 7-year-old Danger Zone and 9-year-old Teal Rhino (both 16#) doing the damage on the poor defenseless wooden pins.  I wound up with a 207 average (highest ever) with them.  About 10 weeks into the season, somebody asked me where I managed to find the Zone and was shocked when I told him I have had it for 7 years.

This summer I went to 15 pounds with an X-Factor Deuce, Mutant, and Target Zone.  I like the Mutant for heavy-oil, and I tried the Deuce in my summer league (203 average) yesterday.  I did not get the reaction I was hoping for with it (need more practice), and after shooting 381 after 2 games I pulled out the Danger Zone and shot 235.  Needless to say, the opponents (who were teammates last fall and will be again this fall) knew it was over when the Zone came out.  Afterwards, they said they were happy that I am still on their team this fall.  

I'm definately keeping the Zone and the Rhino in the bag this fall.

I have an old Columbia U2 pearl urethane for super dry.  It's a great ball.  I used to use it almost exclusively in the house my team used to bowl in before we moved on account of the old place used no oil.  It was the first few years of reactives, and everybody wanted to try them out, but it was no use in that house.  We left just in time, because within a year the place closed and was bulldozed.  My U2 was beat up so badly it was pitiful.  I had the pro shop resurface it and put a mirror shine on it and, WOW!  It's a beautiful blue pearl.  Very effective, and right purty too.

Makes me wish I had never given away my Red Pearl Hammer, Baby Blue Hammer, even that ugly Gold Angle, especially my two old Black U-Dots.

This leaves the infamous Black Brunswick Phantom. It suffers from hard to shine disease also but still works good with my limited hand on a light condition.

The beauty of some of these old urethane balls is you can actually make a noticable ball reaction effect loading up on finger and side weight compared
to the new wonder core asymmetrical resins and particles of today that a little tweak for finger or side weight doesn't really alter the reaction as much.

My friend in Arkansas has an original Ebonite Thunderbolt he is giving to me.
I'll only have to plug and relocate/drill the thumb. Can't wait to try that oldie but goodie out.

An Edge for dry?  Are you kidding?  It may be old, but that cover will hook in almost anything.

A couple more that see occasional use are the Gold Angle and a Black Amber Zone.  The Zone was a mild reactive even for it's time.  It's extremely mild nowadays, but on it's condition it has the good old Zone hit.  The Gold Angle is retired, but has an iconic status for my Friday team.  It is The Cheeseball.  I bowl lead-off on Friday, and throw the Gold Angle for my first ball of every season.  I then set it on it's thumbhole so my teammates can pay it homage.

Blue pearl Hammer has a permanent spot in my bag. Like Bob indicated, I found it useful on easy house shots when I want to go down and in, or on short oil conditions and as a spare ball.

Brunswick GTB- not the gold lettered one, the harder blue lettered one. Should of brought it to ABC's for the BTM.
