1984 Angle Open - Bowling Video
« on: May 26, 2006, 05:33:48 AM »
Now we go back to February 11, 1984 to the Angle Open held at Dick Weber Lanes. The following links show the championship match between Nelson Burton Jr. vs. Pete Weber. Nelson Burton Jr. was on fire that day setting the PBA 4 game record of 1050, a 262 average. The record stood until David Ozio shot 1070 in 1995 for 4 games, and the current record holder with 1129 is Bob Learn, Jr. who set the mark in 1996. I can remember watching this live, and just being amazed at what Nelson had achieved. I received this tape from Brian, a regular poster here. It's probably a copy of a copy 5 times over, but still it's interesting to watch. Dick Weber stepped into the booth with Chris Shenkel. It's interesting to hear Dick call the action with his son Pete in the finals. For those too young to remember, you can see how high PDW's backswing used to be. I think there was a prior post of single pin spared missed on TV...well, PDW missed (2) 10-pins in this match. Pete's first wife, Dee Dee is shown too. Anyway, you may have to turn your sound up all the way to hear the action, as this is an old old tape. Still, I hope you enjoy it.

Burton Angles Record

Nelson Burton Jr. bowled a record-breaking four-game series as he captured the $125,000 Angle Open. The PBA Hall of Famer and ABC-TV's expert commentator qualified fourth for the stepladder finals and averaged 262, totaling 1050 for the afternoon en route to the $20,000 top prize and his 17th PBA championship.

Burton's first victim was Paul Gibson, 278-218. Marshall Holman went down next, 279-217. The tightest match was against Pete Couture who pressured Burton to roll a 10th frame double, which Burton did, to record a 257-249 victory.

Top-seeded Pete Weber could not keep up with Burton's strike blitz, losing 236-184, in the familiar surroundings of Dick Weber Lanes. Burton's series surpassed the previous record of 1021 set by Larry Laub in 1972.
