rg and differential
« on: July 26, 2003, 02:17:42 AM »
Awhile back, I saw a post regarding the differences between a low RG and a high RG ball, as well as a low differential and high differential ball.  I tried finding it, and maybe I didn't even find it here, but anyways, if I remember correctly, a lower RG ball will hook earlier than a higher RG ball, and then a low differential ball will hook less than a higher differential ball...but is that right?

My question is in regards to the comparison between Storm's Shock Trauma and Roto Grip's Top Fuel.  Regardless of price and anything else, I was wondering which ball would be best for what I'm looking for.  I want this ball to be a fairly predictable solid reactive that can still be fairly forgiving with a little backend movement.  I have a Freak and a Silver Streak Pearl, and I want this ball to fit in between those two.  Longer than the Freak, earlier than the SSP, more backend than the Freak, less than the SSP.  My specs should be in my profile, but if not, i'll add those.

Ok, I got off track...the two balls in question, the Shock Trauma and the Top Fuel are as follows...

RG:  Shock Trauma..2.52  Top Fuel..2.54
Differential:  Shock Trauma..0.055  Top Fuel..0.050

So yea, any input is much appreciated, thanks guys.

Andrew,

In general you are on the right path. As you can see from your own entry the core specs on those 2 balls are very close. However, surface being the largest factor beyong the bowler, it is probably safe to ignore those specs when comparing those balls and focus on their cover stock. As you can easily tell, (from looking at the balls on their respective websites) the surface preparation is not all that different; that leaves the surface itself. While it is almost imposisble to tell, based on the ball reviews in Bowling This Month and in Bowlers; Journal, the balls do not have major differences, especially when trying to fit them between the Freak and the SSP. I'd say either one would probably suit your needs.

Each ball will have their own aficionado or fan (OR fanatic) based on their personal success with them. Maybe someone who has used both balls WITH SIMILAR drillings and untouched surfaces can provide more detailed comparison data for you.

I believe the Top Fuel might have slightly more natural length, out of the box, but huge difference. I also believe more people have expressed (here at ballreviews) a liking for the Top Fuel than have liked the Shock Trauma.

I'd say, but the cheapest one, the prettiest one, the one your driller likes best, the one your girl friend likes best. Your choice.
